Hey guys!
me and 19_rayofsunshine were bored and we just texted around a little bit, which turned out to be a HUGE conversation about carol and complexity of love, and I wanted to share this with you, because maybe some people have mutal questions or theories.
I think these are really interesting thoughts of us so enjoy reading it!ella
meThe thing is, Carol (the movie) made me realize, that to show to a person that you love them is also letting them go and chase their dreams and what makes them happy. Because, when you love someone, their happiness and sucess are your priorities.
But, at the end they still ended up together. Like, their looks showed possibility and every live starts with possibility and that time, Carol was now free and divorced from her husband. So, there was possibility and I think, that is the start of their happy ever after.
see and that's why we all love this movie, it portrayes so much more than just diversity in society then and now, it is really deep and If you think properly you see the message after every word, mimik, eyes and the way they behave
It doesn't only show love, it shows the real meaning of love. Like, it saying that the amount of time you had with each other doesn't define the relationship you have, rather the amount of love you have for each other is what defines your relationship and that is what's important
its just a movie but still its so much more, the silence in the move that describes therese and the 50s so perfectly, the looks carol and therese give each other in the movie, and cate's eyes and then there's so much pain but yet so much love in their eyes, so much you think they are in love in real life, then there are these extraordinary outfits and perfect hair and jewelry. then the book which is extraordinary with so much details, written with so much love in it, ugh god I could write 10 pages about this book its so awesome and perfect and powerful and I just cant describe it its fabulous
it's the best thing that ever happened to me this book changed my life in so many different ways and I can't express how much I love patricia highsmith for writing this novel I just can't it's THE BEST FUCKING BOOK and I really really need this thing everyday I wouldn't know what to do without it
But, the thing that really caught my heart in Carol was, the moment they met. When their eyes met, it was something you can't put into words. Like, they were both empty and youbcan see that in their eyes, but when they saw each other, a smile may not have plastered in their faced but their gloomy eyes showed glittering stars that lights up the dark sky. That's when we all knew, Carol and Therese will forever be together
it's just so much more than just a simple movie, it's a true portrait of life and all its complex confidences, it shows how you can never really control your life it is just like it is and it will never change. Carol and Therese do not only show how love can be, so strong although it may not be there for long, but it was kinda there before you knew the other, it's like it was meant for you from the beginning, and they also make clear that love has no age or gender, you love who you love and there's nothing you can do about it because you don't fall in love with someone's hair colour or eye colour, it's the soul that's behind all that.
and that's also why you immediately get on with one another, because the love was always there before you knew the other person. It was always there and it will always be there whether you deny it or not, you can't just erase such a important and meaningful part of yourself, that's why you feel shattered and empty when you loose a really important person in your life, it's like a part of you is not there and when you are with them the whole world changes, it suddenly all makes sense, it all feels right and that's what this movie makes clear
I agree tho. Like, they met in the point of their lives when they didn't expect to be in love. It just shows how you can recieve love at unexpected times. And when Carol wrote "Our lives stretched out ahead of us, a perpetual sunrise." It hitted me, life will always be full of surprises and it will bring many people in our life, but there will be that one person that will grow into someone special, a sunrise is beautiful, right? So, meaning, they will be there for sometime or for a long time and make your life beautiful and full of light, but then, like the sun it also sets, they will leave but you will thank the sky for a once
Just like that, you will also thank life for that once in a lifetime experience with that person even though they may have to leave, and those memories you made are the ones you'll hold onto, forever.
omg that brings me to another point, a perpetual sunrise, it will come again and again every time, it will continue to be there, and every time you loose your person, the person you truly love and appreciate, the one that changed your life forever, made sense to it, made it worth living, you will meet the same soul again in another life, it will all make sense again, and although you at first think you don't know the person standing before you, you yet know what they need in moments of sadness, like therese knew how to comfort carol because of the injunction, how carol made therese stop crying after just one touch and simple words, which are yet so meaningful, it doesn't take much because just the touch of the loving person makes you calm down, and makes you feel better, it makes you calm and you don't have to worry about anything at that time because it's just that person, and it will always be this person like in the book at the end when therese said "It would be Carol, in a thousand cities, a thousand houses, in foreign lands where they would go together, in heaven and in hell." It will always be that soul, it will never change, it doesn't matter if you want it or not, you can't change it.
and also, it isn't that simple, you have to fight for your love, it sometimes may be so easy, but it can also be extremely challenging, confusing, complicated and difficult, because some people may not accept you the way you are and that's also something very important that comes over in this movie, or originally the book, It will never be easy, but you'll make the best out of it, like when therese asks carol in the book "Do people always fall in love with things they can't have?" and carol responds with "Always.", it's because they feel like it wasn't made like that, they weren't meant for each other from society, but yet they don't care because when you truly love someone you can't just cut it, you will never be able to cut it, it will be there forever
Like, for therese, Carol and the love they have is her safe haven. Carol was her home, and the heart, no matter how far it wanders will always return to it's home; home where it's safe and loved, accepted and cared for. They were each other's home. You know, they werent together for a long time compared with the time Carol had with her husband but, the amount of love she had for therese will never be comparable to the love she had for her husband because therese was the one who will always take hold of her heart. She was happy with therese, they were perfect, but as she said, everything comes full circle and their actions had consequences and they needed to face that. Life will always come full circle, our actions will always affect something or someone. So, when they were caught, the only thing that she can do to protect Therese was to- release her and so she did. She did it not to get away from the consequences but to let therese be safe and happy, even though she lost her home.
Even though she lost her safe haven, her safe skies.
You will see it through their eyes, that they were each other's home.
And no one can change that.
what if carol and therese really existed, what if patricia highsmith knew them, what if it is based on a true story, what if the reality was that after what happened with the letter they couldn't get back together and ended up partet from each other and patricia highsmith wanted a full love for them and knew it would've been worth to fight for their love but carol and therese were just not strong enough to get through with it so they ended up shattered and broken, and abby portraits patricia highsmith that tried to be there for their friend
What if? What if they truly existed and their love story couldn't continue, that's why patricia was the one that continued it for them? What if their love was beautiful and unique? What if they were just not imaginations?
what if patricia still loved her carol but still wanted the best for carol and therese after their love brocke down so she wrote the book and included her as abby, who is also a very important person in the book
What if she was close to this two people, Carol and Therese in real life and she saw the fallout of theur relationship and saw how it broke the two people? And so, she decided to write a happily ever after for their once upon a time that they never got to experience?Well like I said, its very long, longer than my chapters( 1k 7) but it's interesting and I hope you enjoyed it!
