I moved around uncomfortably in my sleep. Screams echoed throughout the ship's walls as we sailed towards America.
I stood up, unable to take it anymore. The wooden door creaked as I opened it and walked out into the empty hallway.
Another scream. The last thing I wanted to witness in my seasick state was something gruesome, yet I found myself drawn to the room all the way on the other side of the corridor.
I heard footsteps, and something being slammed against the wall. Instinctively, I slipped into the space between the wall and my door. I shut my eyes as Kol walked off in the other direction. Curious, I hesitantly made my way towards the room they had just left.
At first, I thought someone had spilled the rich wine that had been brought upon the ship when the Mikaelsons had compelled it to be their own. The red liquid was all over the wooden floors. Then I realized it wasn't wine... It was blood.
I stumbled backwards. My back hit the door and closed it with a small thud. In the middle of the room, strung up by her wrists, was Beatrice. Blood covered her from head to toe, yet not a single wound was visible. Whatever injuries Kol had inflicted on her had all healed in a short matter of time... Was she now a vampire?
Beatrice's cloak and hood had been removed, and I now realized that she was much younger than I had first thought her to be. In fact, she barely looked older than me. Eighteen, or nineteen at most.
Right then and there, in that exact moment, was the first time I ever realized the consequences of going up against the Mikaelson siblings. The entire scene of Beatrice standing there, sobbing, drenched in blood, would remain in my mind, burned in as an image forever.
I don't know how long I stood there, unable to move at the shock of it all. I was vaguely aware of the panicked voices of the Mikaelson siblings as they learned of my absence. The shouts of Elijah and Rebekah, running through the halls in search for me, was barely audible.
"Helena," Elijah said. He had finally thought to look for me here. He looked at my expression, then at Beatrice, who had her eyes shut, as if that could help make her entire predicament disappear.
"Helena?" Elijah said in a gentler voice, placing a hand on my shoulder. I flinched, and looked around wildly. It took me a moment to remember the Mikaelsons needed me alive and unharmed for whatever mad plan it was they hoped to fulfill.
I allowed Elijah to lead me out of that room. He led me up to the deck of the ship, where the cold winds of the sea made my hair fly around wildly. I felt him wrap a cloak around me. I held it tight between my fragile fingers. Then I closed my eyes as Beatrice's screaming began again.
"Why do you do this to her?" I said suddenly, turning to Elijah. He stared out towards the see for a few seconds before replying. "I enjoy this no more than you do. Kol, however..." he trailed off. "You're his older brother, surely you can stop them? She's just a girl!" I shouted. The loud winds muffled my voice, yet somehow Elijah managed to hear what I said.
"A girl who just nearly killed all of us... Nearly killed you," Elijah said. "And wasn't it you and your siblings who took out an entire squadron of French Soldiers less than two days ago?" I said. Elijah stared at me with an unreadable expression on his face.
"You should go back to sleep," he told me. Sleep. As if that were possible with all the screaming going on right down the hall.
I stomped my way over towards the stairs and descended down towards the lower floors. The ship suddenly lurched forward, making me lose my balance. I hit my forehead on my room door. My hand flew up to where I had gotten hurt. I sank to the ground and began crying, rubbing my fingers back and forth on my forehead. It hurt so badly, I wanted to scream. I pounded my fists on the wall beside me as tears began spilling out of my eyes. I had lost so much in so little time. I was never going to see my fiance, my mother, my country, ever again...
"I know what you did! I know what you monsters did!" I heard Beatrice shriek. "You told me if I joined your army, you could protect me! You said you could make me strong enough that no one would dare hurt me as they hurt my family! You manipulated me when I was at my weakest, when I had just heard the horrid screams being forced out of my parents' mouths as they were burned by the king's men for possessing a gift! A gift you used to shield yourselves from danger-" There was a gruesome squelching noise, a pained shout followed.
"But then I learned the truth," Beatrice panted out, as if it were hard for her to breathe. "You were the ones responsible for the guards' actions, you compelled the guards to track down my family, you compelled them to kill my mother and father, all so you could have a powerful witch by your side. You knew witches couldn't be compelled, which was why you used my desperate emotions against me-" she let out another large gasp.
"What are you waiting for, Kol?" Beatrice was laughing. "Do it! Rip my heart out of my chest, and be done with it!" Her voice was full of insanity. "Rip it out! Rip it out! Rip it-"
A loud gasp. Then silence. A dark, hollow, silence.
