Present Day

Klaus and I walk into the Mystic Grill, arm in arm, our strides matching with each other perfectly.

"Ready to have some fun, love?" Klaus says, looking over at the bar, where Elena and Damon are talking to one another.

"You okay?" Elena asks.

"What makes you think I'm not okay?" Damon says, rolling his eyes.

"Well, you're daydrunk," Elena says. "It's not exactly your most attractive look."

Damon nods and gives her his signature smirk. "Then what is my most attractive look?" he asks, moving closer towards her.

Elena smiles, then sighs. "I'm not saying you have any attractive looks. I'm saying this is my least favorite one..." She falters when she notices me and Klaus walking towards her and Damon.

"Noted," Damon says to Elena as he stares back at us, "See if I can make any improvements." Damon stands up and protectively steps in front of Elena.

"Don't mind me," Klaus smiles.

"Klaus," Elena breathes.

"You gonna do this in the Grill? In front of everyone? It's a little beneath you, don't you think?" Damon says, standing up straighter to try and look taller, to try and look more confident. But I know it's all an act- my vampire hearing picks up on the sound of his heartbeat, and the beating rate tells me just how scared he is. What surprises me is that he's more scared for Elena than for himself.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Klaus says coolly.

"That's right, Salvatore," I reply, "We just came down to the local pub to grab a drink with a friend," I say, beckoning over one of the few hybrids that didn't die during Mikael's attack.

Elena's face changes as she notices the hybrid. Her knuckles turn white as she grips the side of the table. "You- you, I know you, you were following me this morning," Elena stutters, as Damon looks at her in alarm.

Klaus's smile grows wider as he watches the two of them amusedly. "Get a round in, would you, Tony?" Klaus says to his hybrid.

"I'm surprised you stuck around town long enough for happy hour," Damon says, in an obvious attempt to draw the attention away from Elena.

"My sister seems to be missing. Need to sort that out," Klaus answers.

"Cute blonde bombshell, psycho. Shouldn't be too hard to find," Damon says.

"Truth is, though," I say, stepping in between the two of them, "I've grown to rather like your little town. Think I might fancy a home here, what do you think, Nik?" I ask, placing an arm around his shoulder.

"I think I agree with you completely," he replies. "I imagine you're wondering how does this is affect you," Klaus says to Damon rhetorically.

"The answer is, not in the slightest. As long as we get what we want and everyone behaves themselves, you can go on living your little lives however you choose," I say on cue.

"You have my word," Klaus finishes with a sarcastic bow.

"What more could you possibly want?" Elena says.

"Well for starters, you can tell me where I might find Stefan," Klaus says.

"Stefan skipped town the second he saved your ass," Damon replies.

I smile and walk over to Damon, closer and closer towards him, until our bodies are only inches apart.

"Well you see that is a shame," I say, reaching behind him and grabbing a dart. I whirl around using my vampire speed and throw the dart. It flies past the length of the entire bar, narrowly missing the heads of several humans, and sticks itself straight in the bull's eye of the target hanging on the opposite wall.
