"It's always nice to see a vampire in his true element," Klaus says, walking over to me and putting his arm around my shoulder. I roll my eyes and stare as Stefan moves onto the human boy. "The species has become such a broody lot," Klaus continues.
"No. You did this to him," Elena says, fighting off the tears that are threatening to spill onto her face.
"I invited him to the party, love. He's the one dancing on the table," Klaus replies. The back doors burst open and Rebekah marches in. "Where is it?" Rebekah screams hysterically, rushing towards Elena.
"Where is it?! Where's my necklace?" Rebekah yells. "What are you talking about?" Klaus says, lifting his arm off of me and marching towards his sister.
"She has my necklace- Look," Rebekah says, shoving a phone in Klaus's face. Klaus yanks the phone away from her and stares at the picture of Elena.
"Well, well. More lies," Klaus says, glancing over at Stefan. I run a hand through my hair nervously. At least this lie can't be traced back to me.
"Where..." Rebekah heaves, "Is it?" she screams at Elena.
"I don't have it anymore," Elena says, clenching her teeth. "You're lying!" Rebekah shouts. Her eyes turn black and her fangs bare.
I might have been able to stand by while Klaus slapped Elena across the face, but I can't do the same for an attack from Rebekah which is sure to be fatal.
"Rebekah!" I shout. I aim a kick towards her gut, but she turns around to face me, and that makes my foot fly a little higher than I had originally planned it to be. Rebekah stumbles back, clutching at her mouth as blood begins to spurt out of her torn lip.
With a furious scream, Rebekah charges towards me. To my surprise, Klaus stops her before she can reach me, and pushes her to the ground.
"Knock it off!" Klaus shouts.
"Make her tell me where it is, Nik!" Rebekah yells, pointing her finger at Elena. I raise an eyebrow- exactly when did she find time to get her nails painted an acrylic pink?
Klaus turns towards Elena. Again I'm surprised, for she doesn't stumble away, which is what any ordinary human would have done.
"Where's the necklace, sweetheart?" Klaus says in a dangerously calm voice. "Be honest," he adds. Elena shakes her head. "I'm telling the truth," she insists. Then she sighs. "Katherine stole it."
Rebekah lets out an enrage yell, while Klaus stares at the ground. I can't see his facial expression, but I'm guessing he has on the sort of smile he wears right before he blows up a building.
"Katerina. Of course," Klaus says, turning towards me. I suddenly find extreme interest in staring at the bleachers behind him. "Well, it's quite unfortunate your great ancestor here let her go then, isn't it?" he says, squeezing my shoulders. I shrug his hand aside.
"If we had the necklace it would make things a whole lot easier for your witch, but since we're doing this the hard way, let's put a clock on it, shall we?" Klaus says, his eyes wandering over towards the huge digital board at the top of the gymnasium wall. It flickers on. The minute reads twenty.
"Twenty minutes," Klaus says, walking over towards Stefan, "If Bonnie hasn't found a solution by then, I want you to feed again. Only this time," Klaus says, pausing for dramatic effect, "I want you to feed on Elena. You know you want to."
My eyes widen. There's no way to stop Klaus now. Even if I risk my life trying to save Elena, there's no guarantee she'll even survive. Scratch that- she won't survive. There's only one way Elena survives now, and that's if Klaus deems fit she needs to live. Bonnie needs to figure out a way to convince Klaus that he needs her alive...
"No, Klaus! Don't do this to him!" Elena yells. Ignoring her, Klaus looks at me, yet directs his words towards Stefan. "No one leaves. If she tries to run, fracture her spine."
"Let's go, shall we, Rebekah?" Klaus says. Rebekah walks towards him happily. "Where are we going?" she asks. "To check on my hybrid, of course. He should have waken up by now," Klaus says, walking with her towards the door. Then he stops, and turns towards me.
Within the blink of an eye, he's standing in front of me.
"Unfortunately, you have vervain in your system, so I can't compel you. But know this- do anything to interfere with these two lovebirds," Klaus says, gesturing towards Elena and Stefan, "And I'll tear you open until you are free of vervain, and you'll never get another taste of it again. The rest of your eternal life will be controlled by me," Klaus says, leaning into my ear as he whispers the last sentence.
I shove him away. "What makes you so sure that's a viable threat?" I ask him coolly. Klaus shrugs.
"Well, it's up to you, really, whether you save this girl whom you've not shared a single conversation with, and live a life unable to think for yourself... Or not," Klaus says in the same cool tone. He then turns around and leaves.
