'Mia! How could you leave school on your own after what happened!?' her mother complained. 'I'm so glad you're okay.'
'It was fine, I was with Yaxuan, I wasn't alone.' Mia assured her as she looked in her plate of supper.
'So those men who were captured today were taken to the hospital?' Zhenyuan changed the subject curiously. 'Have they found any similarity with the man who was captured first?'
'Yes.' Mia's mother replied to him. 'It was confirmed that they both have dark colored cold blood. And it seems they don't have human DNA.'
'Vampires!' Mia suddenly said after dropping her fork onto the table. 'I can't believe they're real.'
'Or...there's a virus spreading and it's causing mutation in the human DNA.' Zhenyuan shrugged.
'That's exactly what Dr. Carnie said, you must be really smart.' Mia's mother smiled. 'This is why I enrolled you in school almost immediately.'
'Well I don't believe it's a virus one bit.' Mia continued. 'What kind of virus would that be turning people into literal vampires?'
'You watch too much fantasy movies.' Zhenyuan laughed.
Or maybe I have a really weird friend, Mia thought to herself.
'So is it safe to go to school?' Mia asked fearfully, the thought of passing that forest again almost made her skin crawl. Something about what she had encountered just made her feel like she had almost had a near fatal encounter with a vampire.
'Well the government says it's safe. They scouted the entire area for men showing the same symptom but found none. Clearly means all of them have been captured.' Her mother replied.
Mia had another thing to worry about now: going to school with Zhenyuan or Jungwon? She felt awkward with Zhenyuan since what happened in the kitchen, and the thought of it made her cheeks burn up every time. Well, she didn't want to be alone with Zhenyuan after that, so she decided she would be going at a regular time from then on and try to avoid the drama.
Besides, being with two people guaranteed her more protection from the vampires than being with one right? She was honestly afraid.
...
Mia was ready for school the next morning, and so was Zhenyuan. She had to admit, he looked quite dashing in the school uniform more than a lot of boys at her school.
'Quickly! Let's go!' Mia told him the moment she saw Jungwon leaving his house from the living room window. It was weird that all this time she had been avoiding him then now she suddenly wanted him around.
'Um...okay.' Zhenyuan replied, grabbing his backpack.
Mia opened the door, and Jungwon didn't take long to notice her, one hand on the strap of his bag and one hand on the handle of his umbrella. He stopped midway on the sidewalk. Their houses were opposite each other, so they consequently ended up on different sidewalks. When Zhenyuan saw Jungwon, he immediately felt offended by his presence. The news he had heard about him was too terrible for Zhenyuan to view him as someone innocent.
'Hey! Come join us!' Mia found herself exclaiming, something she would never do at school.
'Really?' Zhenyuan asked with a frown. 'Why would you invite the guy your mother told me to specifically protect you from?'
'Well because...' Mia turned to him, 'because you're here now. I'm pretty sure you're not scared of Jungwon right? Or you think Jungwon can beat you up?' Mia knew Zhenyuan wouldn't want to appear like he was afraid of Jungwon, so he would probably change his mind and tell her it's fine for Jungwon to walk with them. She knew boys had egos.
