"For the last time. We're just friends!" Ally said for the thirty-second time that day. "Now will you drop it!"
Heather glared at her from the side as they waltzed into the cafeteria for lunch.
"Not until you admit it." She smirked.
"Fine. I like him." Ally muttered. "You happy? He's not like other guys. He's sweet and strange and smart and considerate. So sue me."
"I knew I could break you." She chuckled. "So, you gonna tell him?"
"No, I'm not gonna tell him," Alyssa stated.
"Oh, come on," Heather whined.
"Heather will you quit it?!"
"What? You're just gonna stay with Eric and never tell Hayden?" She wondered.
"Pretty much."
"Ally, life's too short. You have to express your feelings. Stop wasting time." Heather sighed.
"Look, I just want to get through the year. Then Eric can go off to wherever it is he goes to and I never have to see him again."
"Alyssa Hunter!" Heather jumped in her path. "If you don't tell him, I might just have to do it for you."
"You wouldn't." Ally glared.
"Wanna test that theory?" Heather smirked. "Just, think about it."

"So, you spent the night at Ally's house?" Justin asked.
"Yes. It wasn't intentional. I was helping her write her history paper. She fell asleep and I couldn't get home in the storm." Hayden told him.
"You should feel honored. Ally doesn't let anybody come over. Except for Heather. Not even Eric." Justin explained.
"Well, maybe that's not such a bad thing," Hayden admitted.
"What? Eric?"
Hayden's grip tightened on his lunch tray. And it didn't go unnoticed.
"I'm guessing he's not your favorite person?" Justin thought.
"He hurt Ally." Hayden scowled.
"He tries but Ally's never given him the chance," Justin explained.
"I meant emotionally."
"Oh." He thought. "Yeah, we aren't supposed to talk about that?"
"Why not?" Hayden wondered.
"Heather tried bringing it up once before and Ally was not happy about it." Justin chuckled nervously. "I mean, seriously. She lost it. She can get pretty defensive. She has the impression that she has to be this fearless and independent person."
"That just doesn't sound like Ally to me."
"Look, you're new here." Justin reminded. "Ally is pretty much the Queen Bee around here." Hayden stared at him blankly. "The popular girl." He explained. "If she and Eric broke up, let's just say, people would be talking about it for a long time. And Ally just wants to finish high school without all the drama."

"Hey." Hayden greeted as they finally made their way to the table where the rest of the group were sat waiting.
"Hey." Ally blushed.
"Mmhmm," Heather smirked knowingly.
"I will break you." Ally whispered.
