As Marcellus got older, his relationship with Rebekah shifted to something more and with it came concerns from Saga and Nik. Nik had intervened but it only seemed to bring them closer. Along with this newfound lust, or love; neither could really tell, came Marcel's want to become a vampire. These growing problems lead to Saga feeling like she was smothering Marcel.

These worries were quickly dissolved, however, once Nik had daggered Rebekah once more to ensure his family could remain safe with the two separated. Although the issue of Rebekah and Marcel's relationship had been solved, the vampire problem became harder to brush under the rug.

Marcel had been shot by his real father, the governor, when he demanded that the slaves be freed. Saga and Nik both rushed to him to heal him, but Marcel refused. "No. You've always said we choose our family, so what am I to you Klaus?"
Saga watched as he asked him this, upset that the boy who her husband looked to as a son would ask him this, "You made me a promise when you daggered your sister, it's finally time to make a choice. Turn me now or let me die."

"you do not know what you ask of me, of Saga. becoming like us, like me, it would rob you of all that makes you good."

"Marcel, you would be giving up your life, your human life, to become us? all we are seen as is monsters and I wouldn't wish that upon you, my boy."

"I know what you are, who you are, this is what I want. Please." The young man looked at the two people who looked out for him since childhood as they both solemnly nodded at each other before Nik fed him his blood and turned him into a vampire by snapping his neck, Saga whimpering slightly at the sound.

Marcel had been a vampire for over 50 years, and he was living a good life with his family. He and Saga had deepened their bond as mother and son as he had lived as a vampire, but Saga realised he was slowly becoming like Klaus and as much as she loved her husband, seeing the way Marcel treated Rebekah after she was undaggered made her feel like the sweet boy she once knew had truly disappeared.

Marcel had decided to sign up for the army and in doing so, he became the target of Klaus' rage and Saga's upset. His enlistment came as a stab in the back for Klaus as the boy he raised into a young man who had now become a member of his family wanted to leave him. "You are not leaving this bloody house Marcel." Nik ordered.

"My enlistment papers say otherwise. 369th regiment, they call them the Harlem Hellfighters, boat leaves tomorrow."

"Is this lunacy because I forbid you to be with Rebekah? So now you're going off to fight the Germans? Fine, go, but remember Marcel this is your home, I am your family, my wife is your family and if you haven't learned in the century since I took you in, then learn it now: family are not just people who coddle you, who grant you your every whim, they are people who fight for you. Who you fight for and if this family endeavors to stop you from making a tragic error of the heart, then by all means express your discontent but what you do not do is abandon us."

Marcel said nothing only grabbing his bag and leaving the room as Klaus continued to loom over him from his rant. Klaus shouting parting words that he would be back. Upon leaving the room as he went to leave the house, he stopped as he heard the faint cries of his mother. It was a noise he had unfortunately gotten used to through the heartbreak and betrayal that plagued the Mikaelsons but now that he knew he was the cause, it left a deep pit in his stomach as he approached her.

"Mom." He said quietly, reminding her of the first time he had referred to her as mother which had occurred after a bad dream and led him to her bed to receive comfort.

"Marcellus you haven't called me that in a very long time." She quietly laughed at the man before her.

"I know you're upset with me leaving but please tell me you aren't mad at my decision."

Saga stood up and moved towards her son, "I could never be mad at your decisions to do good. I'm just worried about you. I would respect anything you do. Ignore Nik, he can be very temperamental when it comes to people leaving, but he says and does things from a place of love. We both want you to be safe and I know you will be. You've come a long way, my sweet boy. Good luck." Saga pressed a kiss to his forehead with tears still on her face as she hugged Marcel goodbye as he went to war.
