negan climbs out of the truck. i do the same, cowering behind his men. i knew rick and carl would be upset to see that the kids weren't with me.

he bangs on the gate with his bat, as if he didn't know that they would open it immediately.

"well, someone's happy to see me, i didn't even have to say anything."

"where are they?", rick growls in a low voice.

"who? oh, the people i took? well one of 'em's right over there somewhere, don't worry about the rest, ricky boy." he says smiling.

he throws his arm over rick's shoulder, but not before rick makes eye contact with me. "now where's our shit, prick?"

they carried on a conversation as i made my way back to my 'old' house. i opened the door, no one had moved in yet. it was as if rick was saving it for me, waiting for me to come back with the kids.

when the door shut behind me i rested my head against it, closing my eyes briefly. i know i won't get much time by myself, so i do a quick sweep. i grab mila's stuffed animal and mason's picture of his mom.

we had to talk to the stars since he didn't have it, so i knew i needed that. i traced my thumb over her as if she could feel that i was here. the picture was of her mason and mila, mila had just been born and mason was so happy. i took the picture on an old polaroid i'd found.

i also made sure to grab the polaroid of her, lori, and i. we took this in college, both their arms draped around me as we smiled, sunglasses hiding our drunk eyes and we laughed.

i stuffed all the things i had grabbed into a bag just as i hear the door open, "y/n, you in here?" i hear simon ask.

"coming," i say as i walk down the stairs.

"boss wants to talk."

"of course he does, what could he possibly want to talk about?"

"don't know, don't care. just doin' my job."

i hide my annoyance as i follow him out the door, crossing my arms as we walk.

"what?" i say as we approach him.

"now, what's with the attitude? i'm the good guy here."

i scoff as i look down, "i very much disagree with that."

"i swear," he chuckles before exclaiming, "this family, dear god, you are all so ungrateful. you're living, you're fed, you should be happy! you know i could make life so much worse," he swings his bat back and forth, multiple people flinch.

"aw now, nothin' to be scared of guys. it's just lucille, she won't hurt ya... or will she?" he smiles cockily as he watches everyone's reaction.

i roll my eyes as he blabbers on, carl inches closer to me. eventually, we're side by side and he positions himself in front of me, as if protecting me from negan.

negan's grin impossibly grows as he turns around, seeing carl in front of me, "i ain't gonna hurt her kid. promise," he says reaching his hand out for a handshake. carl looks down at his hand then back up at him.

"then let her go, let the kids go," carl says.

"carl-", rick starts.

negan raises his hand at rick, motioning for him to be quiet, "nah, let the kid speak."

"you have no use for them. you're taking our stuff, the least you could do is let us have our people. especially if you want a constant flow of supplies," carl explains.

"the least you could have done was not kill an entire outpost, don't talk about that shit to me kid. i'm doing very nice by all of you," he turns around waving the bat at everyone, "you ungrateful assholes, do you all not see how gracious i'm being? the girl," he points lucille at me, "and the kids stay with me. rick, you sister - sorry sister-in-law - is smoking hot, she's a good doctor, hell, why haven't you hit that yet? i mean you aren't related-"
