Ryder's pov

"Hey guys". I said reaching the basketball fields.

"Hey ryder". Danny fist-bumped with me.

"Ahem... Someone's looking really happy" carlos teased me.

"Oh.. C'mon... I'm like this always " i avoided eye contact.

"Yeah.. I'll find out". Carlos said to me.

"Alright 30 laps.. Let's go." I yelled and everyone lined up. After the run, we started practising for the upcoming match on next saturday. It's against the Royal city high. They're the champions of last year, but this year the trophie will be in our hands.

"Hey jace, pass it. " i yells from a few feet away from him, and open space between him and the ball.

Jace being cornered, but having the advantage of being smaller than the other players, dribbled the ball underneath the guy and does a bounce pass.

Getting the ball, i goes for the rim, taking two steps and a layup, winning the scrimmage between the team.

"Oh man!". Luke says as he lays helplessly on the basketball court.

"Tired?" Trevor asked, stating the obvious as he snatches up the clear liquid bottle that rested beside luke.

"Of course idiot! This is my first practice and I'm not used to this kind of training yet." He says in frustration wanting to be good as other players.

"Then next time don't join in the middle of the season. You're lucky that we even gave you a chance, since our second best player Peter has gotten into a pretty bad accident." Danny said wiping the sweat on his neck letting the towel hang there.

"Then whose the best?" Luke asked again, not surprised that a player got hurt.

"Ryder of course". Carlos flaunts proudly. I saw luke raising an eyebrow and looks towards the team for confirmation, and they all catch his expression nodding their heads.

"Practice over" i said turning around to leave.

"Hey whose that?" Carlos asked standing up from the fields pointing towards the bleachers. The other members has started walking to the lockers. I walked towards the bleachers only to find it was,

Rocky?!

He really looked like a deer caught in a street light.

"What're you doing here rocky?"

"Umm... Ju-just watching you practice ". He looked nervous.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah... I gotta go!" He started to leave.

"Wait". He turned around." You can, after telling the truth". I gave him a stern look. I always seen him leaving the school early but not going home. He sits on bleachers to watch the basketball players.

"Umm.... I"

"Rocky, I've seen you playing basketball during P.E. you're amazing in it and I've asked you several times to join the team. Then why aren't you joining?" I asked him. But he avoided eye contact.

"Remember, we have a match on next saturday." I informed before turning around to leave. He was the coach's help who accompanies us to interschool championships.

He was always strange to understand. But no problem with me.. I'll solve the mystery soon.

Rocky's pov

I saw Ryder and Carlos walking away to the lockers. Picking up my bag, i started walking to my 'house '.

I don't like to go there, but i don't have a choice either. No one knows where i live or where i come from because i never gave them a chance to ask the question. The reason why i avoided everyone was this. If anyone came to know about my situation, I'm sure they'll never look to my side again.

Soon the plain old building came into view with the sign board on the entrance reading  'Greenwood Addison orphanage '.

Yes. I'm an orphan who doesn't even know who his parents are. I was here since the day i was born.

I quickly walked to the room before the in charge and the so called care taker of the orphanage, ms. Maria sees me.

She is nothing other than a nightmare to me. She is 50 year old and has spent 25 years of her life in that orphanage.

For a 50 year old women, she must be a sweet and caring mother figure. But she is anything but a caring mother figure. She just cares about herself and money. She doesn't have children of her own to understand the value and importance of children in one's life.

She treats the children here like trash. I was only 5 when she started giving me work which she used to distribute among children.

You're free till you turn 5. After that you're life anything but good. We do all chores like cleaning, washing, doing dishes etc.

There are many times that she beat us to death. We cried and sobbed, but there was no one to hear our cries as the orphanage was owned by her family. The students who got the scholarships will get the chance to go to high-schools.

The orphanage will provide you until you turn 18. After that you'll be kicked out from there. I don't know where I'll go after that.

In short, my life is a living hell!
