Gordon & Delia

As a child, my older brother played baseball for our city. I would always be in the stands with our parents, but instead of paying attention to the game, I'd do my homework, play with dolls, anything to take me away from the spot I was currently in.

One day after a game when all of the parents were talking and the boys were playing around, I walked onto the field and decided to pick the pretty pink flowers I was eyeing the entire nine innings.

"Delia watch out!" I heard my brother scream.

Wondering what he was talking about, I stood up and was hit directly in the face with a ball.

I woke up in a hospital, surrounded by my family and a few unfamiliar faces. When they saw I was conscious, a woman pushed a boy to my bedside. I recognized him from my brother's team, but I didn't know anything about him.

"Gordon," a man warned.

"I- I'm sorry for throwing my ball at you. I really meant to throw it to Steve, but he moved out of the way."

His mom nudged him and he looked at her, making her raise her eyebrows. He turned back to me but wouldn't meet my eyes.

"I'll stay out the next game and play with you if you want." He looked down at his hands and shook his head. He couldn't believe he had to say that.

That's where my relationship began with Gordon Beckham.

As time went on, we stayed friends. His mom making him skip a game to hang out with me was the best thing that could've happened.

When we made it to high school, Gordon dropped baseball and went on to play football. His position was starting quarterback. Being his best friend, it was only natural that I became the head cheerleader. We went to junior and senior prom together, all while staying best friends. We thought nothing of it until we got accepted into different colleges.

He made it into the University of Georgia while I made it into Georgia State University. We could make the hour and a half trip until life happened. My scholarship required me to do eighteen hours and I had a job. Gordon became a successful shortstop for the Bulldogs. I made it to some games, but it was so hard.

One day during sophomore year, he showed up at my dorm unannounced.

"Delia, I love you so much. This distance made me realize how much I need you. Come back to Athens with me."

That summer, I applied to U of G and was accepted for the major of my choice. I could finally be with Gordon.
