I was always nervous when Bryce was about to bat. He was a star, which made him a target for most. My friends would calm me down when it was his turn, but I was alone today, and it was rough.

The first three times he was up to bat, there were no issues. Clean pitches, clean hits, flawless. Then, the opposing team brought a pitcher out of the bullpen with fire in his eyes. Bryce kept his cool, digging his feet in the dirt and staring the man down, but no one could've anticipated the obviously bad pitch that made its way straight to my boyfriends ankle.

The sound of the 90 mph ball hitting Bryce's ankle was indescribable. It sounded kind of like kicking a big rock down a rocky hill. Crunch.

Bryce was on the ground the second it hit, clawing at his ankle and screaming at the top of his lungs. I was too busy trying to get through the crowd to notice the clearing benches, coming to defend Bryce's honor.

When I got to the locker room, a therapist ran me back to an ambulance.

"Bryce, oh my goodness," I couldn't help it, I broke down.

"I, I'm okay S-Sadie," he said as if he was in a trance.

"He's been given morphine so he can't feel the pain," an EMT explained.

"I love you, Bryce," I said, grabbing his hand and giving it one last kiss before he fell out of consciousness.

Five hours later, Bryce was out of surgery and sulking in his hospital bed.

"That guy ruined my fucking career," he said, trying not to let his emotions get the best of him.

"No he didn't, babe. Sure, you're out for a few months, but you'll be back in no time. Plus, that guy got suspended for the rest of the season. At least he's out for as long as you, if not more."

He shook his head and leaned back, closing his eyes and resting an arm over his face.

"You're gonna get better. I believe in you."

He took his arm from his face and smiled, reaching out and grabbing my hand.

"I love you Sades."

"Love you more, nugget."
