Anthony & Izzy

Anthony and I met for the first time in December, which meant we got to spend our two year anniversary in Italy, not worried about baseball or anything that came with it.

We decided to visit Italy because of his heritage. Although most of his family immigrated to the states, we wanted to show homage to the place his grandparents called home so long ago.

"I wish we could just move here," I mumbled as we walked hand in hand down a cobblestone street in Venice.

"After I retire, we're coming straight here."

I smiled up at him. "We're gonna be together then?"

"Why wouldn't we be?" He asked with furrowed brows.

Instead of answering, I shrugged and looked forward, focusing on the now setting sun. Suddenly, Anthony stiffened beside me and tugged me down a walkway.

"We have a boat ride on the Grand Canal," he stated as we practically jogged through the alley.

We came to a clearing and there was a boat waiting for us, or so I assumed. A man in a striped shirt and a cute hat reached out for my hand, helping me in, then Anthony. After we were seated, the striped shirt man started paddling.

"You almost forgot about this?" I asked as I looked around at the beautifully lit buildings that surrounded the canal.

Anthony chuckled nervously but said nothing which made me look at him. He was wiping his hands down his khaki pants and looking towards the Rialto Bridge. I did the same but saw nothing but darkness in the little openings.

We sat in silence until we passed under the bridge, and that's when Anthony exhaled loudly.

"Look up, Izzy."

I looked at the bridge as we came out on the other side, and saw many umbrellas that spelled out 'Will You Marry Me?'.

I looked back at Anthony for an answer and saw him trying to steady himself on one knee.

"We're gonna be together until I retire, Izzy. Even after that, we'll be together. I love you much, Izzy, and I want to spend the rest of my days with you. Will you marry me?"

I nodded with tears in my eyes, letting him slide the ring on my finger before I practically tackled him. I remembered we were on a boat a tad too late. We toppled over the edge and straight into the freezing canal, not really caring that our outfits were ruined.

"I love you so much, Anthony Rizzo," I smiled after we climbed back into the boat, shivering and very happy.
