Troy & Katy

"I can't believe she's already one," Troy muttered as we watched our daughter waddle around the other babies at her party.

He absentmindedly reached over and grabbed my hand, running his thumb along my palm.

"I can never get over how much she looks like you. Jesus, she's beautiful," I smiled as she caught sight of a toy and lunged for it.

She had chestnut curls that reached just below her shoulder blades and a smile just like her dad's. Because she looked just like him, he never hesitated to make her like him as well. From the time she could grip a toy, Troy made sure to hand her a bat. He swore she'd be a pro softballer in no time.

"Look at the way she hit that ball, K! Atta girl, Scarlett!" He shouted excitedly one hot afternoon.

He bought her a small tee so she could practice her hitting, even though she was barely stable on two feet.

"Go easy on her, Troy. She's not even one yet."

I was brought out of my thoughts when Troy stood up, my hand still in his.

"Time to eat some cake," he said excitedly.

He brought me over to Scarlett and picked her up in one arm, kissing her all over her face and making her giggle loudly.

"I think it's time to sing!" I called out, making all of our friends grab their babies and surround us.

Troy and I took a deep breath and began to sing, everyone soon joining in.

"Happy birthday to you,

happy birthday to you,

happy birthday dear Scarlett,

happy birthday to you. Yay! Blow your candles out baby!" I told her.

She leaned down and more or less spit the candles out. Laughing, everyone clapped and sat their kids back down to continue playing.

"Happy birthday, baby girl," I said, pulling her out of Troy's grip and giving her a kiss on her chubby cheek.
