Recurring Dreams

Pico had the same dream for nights and nights on end. He was beginning to get frustrated every time he woke up. As much as he had those dreams, he never got close to Nene. Because of this, he tried to find new methods of getting close to her. Pico didn't give up. This was because he had an undying urge to get to Nene; it wouldn't leave his mind in the dreams, not even if he tried to stay where he was. He had to get to her, but he couldn't. One night, Pico had made actual progress. He was able to reach his arm out, and Nene extended her arm towards him. However, as their fingers touched, the floor started moving, and Nene was pushed all the way to the end of the hallway, farther away from Pico than she had ever been in any of the dreams. Instead of feeling disappointed, Pico felt angry, and his dream ended.

"DAMMIT!" He yelled as he rose from his bed. He went to school in an irritable mood that morning. Boyfriend and Girlfriend approached him, yet again, hand in hand.

"Hey, Pico!" Boyfriend greeted.

"Mmh." Pico grunted. Girlfriend stopped smiling and gave a slightly concerned expression.

"You have huge bags under your eyes. Did you get enough sleep?" She asked.

"Mm." Pico grunted again, looking to the side. A sly smile formed on Girlfriend's face.

"I see. Someone must be cwanky!" She said, talking in baby talk. Boyfriend chuckled a little. This made Pico even angrier, and he yanked Boyfriend's hat off his head.

"Hey!" Boyfriend exclaimed as he saw Pico walk away with his hat. Boyfriend and Girlfriend just stood there, giving each other confused looks because of Pico's attitude. Less than a minute later, Pico returned, Boyfriend's hat still in his hand, and yanked Girlfriend's ribbon out of her hair, undoing the ponytail and giving it a messy look. He walked away with her ribbon in his other hand.

"Hey!" She exclaimed. She sighed, and walked into the school entrance with Boyfriend. They decided not to take their things back from Pico, seeing as he was in a bad mood that day. Darnell entered the classroom with Nene, and they both noticed Pico sitting with his head down, arms crossed with both Boyfriend's and Girlfriend's head accessories sitting atop his head.

"Uh..." Darnell began, pointing down at Pico with a puzzled expression.

"We don't know either." Replied Boyfriend.

The group went the rest of that day letting pico be. This was because Darnell felt Pico's skin burning as he touched his hand to try to ask him what was wrong. Boyfriend, Girlfriend, and Darnell paid it no mind, figuring that day just wasn't his day. However, Nene was worried. While they were friends at their old school, there was never a day that Pico was too angry to communicate with her and Darnell . They would just keep bothering Pico until they made him laugh, but today was different. That is why, at the end of the day, Nene decided to ask Pico what was wrong.

"Pico? I know you're upset about something, but do you think you could tell me what's wrong?" She asked timidly.

He turned to look at Nene.

"I'm sorry. I haven't been getting enough sleep lately, and it's been affecting my mood." He said.

"Oh. I get that. I've been there before." She said. "Haha... Well, we were worried about you today, so try to go to sleep earlier!"

"Yeah." Pico responded. His heart fluttered a bit at the thought of Nene being worried about him. Pico went to sleep that night, and for the first time in weeks, he hadn't gotten the same dream. His sleep cycle was finally back to normal. Pico never knew why he let it bother him in the first place; he would always wake up and see Nene in real life.

1 week later, Pico fell asleep in the library while studying with Nene. The dream came back, but this time, it wasn't what Pico was expecting. He was finally close to Nene; close enough to hug her. They were both really happy for some reason.

Trigger Warning: Gunshot and blood

Pico felt like he had achieved a lifetime goal, but all of that went away when a gunshot was heard, and Nene fell to the ground. Pico knew it was a dream, he knew none of it was real, and he tried to wake himself up, but the dream wouldn't end. Pico had to watch as his friend bled out and died in his arms. He jolted awake, tears in his eyes, panting.

"Pico? Pico!" Nene exclaimed. He turned to her and pulled her into a tight hug.

"Nene! I..." He couldn't speak.

Nene hugged him back and ran her fingers through his hair.

"Bad dream?" She asked quietly.

"Yeah." Pico said. They stayed like that for a while. Nene decided it would be best if she comforted him for the rest of study hall. The incident from last year had affected her, Pico, and Darnell greatly; Pico especially, since he was the one who had to fight Cassandra and three other kids; the one who experienced the blood and gore first hand. Of course, the three of them had grown to forgive Cassandra, but the everlasting effect was... Well... Everlasting.

"It's alright." Nene whispered. "I'm here."
