That morning, Boyfriend and Girlfriend called Pico, Nene, and Darnell to Boyfriend's house to show them their progress and give them ideas. They tied a mini parachute to their egg and pushed it off Girlfriend's roof. The group of five watched as it hit the ground, and went to the front yard. Their egg landed gently on the grass.
"It worked!" Girlfriend exclaimed. "I think we'll have to take more precaution and pay attention to the rate it hits the ground. Maybe add more stuff to the parachute that'll make it land slower." Girlfriend said.
"That gives me an idea!" Nene said. She whispered to Pico what she thought they could do.
"Are you sure that'll work?" He asked.
"It's worth a try! And hey, if it doesn't, just know that we get a participation grade for this." She said, shrugging.
"She's not wrong." Darnell said. "If your egg doesn't crack, you just get bonus points for an upcoming test." They were all forty five minutes early to homeroom, so Darnell got up from his seat to go to the library.
"Where are you going?" Asked Pico.
"Library. Me and Cassandra decided to draw out our plan before we launch it." He said. "I'll be back at 8:45."
"Those two sorted things out pretty quickly." Nene said.
"Yeah. Cassandra has a lot more restrictions to threatening peoples' lives." Pico said.
During class, Ms. Hatsune was going over methods that would prevent an egg from breaking to give her students ideas. The project was due the next day, and a lot of students became desperate. The rest of the day was a normal day. The group continued to discuss what resources they were using for the egg drop.
After school, Pico and Nene decided to meet at Nene's house to experiment. "I got this idea from a movie, you know." She stated. Her idea was to put the egg in a butternut squash and see if it broke while inside of the squash. "If the squash cracks, good; we'll just have to see if the egg broke, too. If it doesn't, great! The egg probably didn't break either!" She explained.
After they taped the squash shut, they threw it out of Nene's window. Pico and Nene ran to her front yard to see if their idea had worked. There was a small crack on the squash and the two went to remove the tape. They went for it at the same time, so their fingers accidentally touched.
"Oh! Uh... Sorry about that!" Nene stuttered.
"My bad..." Pico mumbled.
"I'll get it." They said in unison, and unintentionally held hands again.
"I'll just... Yeah." Nene awkwardly backed up while Pico picked up the squash and removed the tape. The egg was unharmed. "I didn't think it would actually work!" Nene exclaimed. She hugged Pico but got off of him almost immediately after she noticed how unresponsive he was. She turned away in embarrassment. "I'll see you tomorrow." She said quietly. After Nene returned to her house, Pico, who had also been turned away was able to stop hiding his beet red face.
While Pico walked home, he began to think of other recent encounters he had with Nene besides his strange reaction to that hug. He thought of how angry she became when she thought Pico had been dating two people. Then it hit him.
"Could Nene have been jealous that day?" He thought. To avoid giving himself a headache, he decided to worry about the project due the next day.
