Before Pico knew it, it was already spring. Uniforms had changed and all. Ms. Hatsune put her hands together.
"Alright, everyone! Do you know what time of the year this is?" She asked, looking around the classroom.
Pico tapped Boyfriend on the back.
"Uh... What time of the year is it?" He whispered. Boyfriend smiled back at him.
"That's right, this is your first year going here! Well, every year, we have a dance on April 20th. We have three weeks to prepare!" Boyfriend whispered back.
"That's right; we have our Spring Fling! You have three weeks to get dresses, suits, and dates ready!" Ms. Hatsune said. She went over the rules and expectations of the dance. Nene stared at Pico, already wondering how she would ask him to the dance. "Oh, and finally, there are spots open for anyone to prepare and decorate the school for the dance. You can stay after school to help anytime you want. Clubs will be postponed until after the dance." Ms. Hatsune added.
By now, everyone had gotten word of the dance, and the whole school was buzzing about it. At lunch, Boyfriend and Girlfriend were already on the topic of whose car they would take, because they already knew they would be taking each other.
"Are you going with anyone, Darnell?" Asked Pico.
"Actually, yes." He answered. Pico spit out his juice. Nene, who had been really focused on how she would ask Pico out even looked up at Darnell in surprise. They were both shocked because they never really saw him interact with anyone other than them, Boyfriend and Girlfriend.
"You talked to another female?" Pico asked, wiping juice off his face.
"What's it to you? Do you think I sit around and wait for you two to return like some kind of loyal dog while y'all are out being lovey-dovey?" He asked.
"Well... Yeah." Nene said.
Darnell chuckled. "No." He answered.
"Oh." Nene and Pico said in unison.
"Well, who is it you're taking?" Pico asked.
Darnell blushed looked down. "Um... Cassandrr..." He muttered, trailing off.
"Who?" Nene asked.
"You know... That... Girl..." Darnell stuttered.
"So you aren't taking anyone. Got it." Pico said.
"I'M TAKING CASSANDRA, DAMMIT! YES, THE GIRL I DID ONE PROJECT WITH AND NEVER STOPPED TALKING TO." Darnell yelled.
Pico and Nene stared at Darnell in shock.
"You were afraid of her at the beginning of the year..." Nene said.
"Yeah, I was. But I'm not explaining any further." Darnell said, crossing his arms. Pico and Nene shrugged it off, and spent the rest of lunch having real talk about how fast the year had gone by.
When school was over, Pico, Darnell, Boyfriend, and Girlfriend went home, while Nene decided to help decorate and prepare the school for the Spring Fling. Since astronomy club was postponed, she had to find something else that would prevent her from thinking about Pico. She was planning on asking him, but the fear of being rejected grew larger and larger the whole day. The colorful decorations and cute posters did make her feel better, though. Nene decided she would still enjoy the dance even if Pico did reject her.
2 weeks later
Nene still hadn't asked Pico to the dance yet, even though the hallways were fully decorated by now, and half the school already had dates. There was even a rumor that two seniors, Sarv and Ruv would be voted best couple. That day at lunch, it was just Pico and Nene. Darnell was talking to Cassandra, and Boyfriend and Girlfriend were eating at the romantic spot they found at the beginning of the year. Pico, like always, was turned away from Nene. She sighed as she rescheduled the time she was going to ask him. Obviously, he was uncomfortable at the moment. Then, she reconsidered her decision.
"No... It's already been two weeks. It's now or never!" She thought. Nene reached out to Pico to tap him on the shoulder, but before she could, a blonde girl approached them.
"Um... Pico?" She asked. Pico turned to her.
"You probably don't know me, but... I'm from your old school." She said. (If you look at the full flash playthrough of Pico's School, you'll see a blonde girl in a red shirt in the beginning.) Nene stared at the girl nervously. She really hoped the girl wasn't about to ask what Nene thought she was about to ask. "Would you..." She continued. "...Go to the dance with me.?" She asked. Pico fully turned to her. He didn't look surprised or impressed.
"You've got the I don't know you part right. I'm sorry, but that's a no." He said. The girl made a sad whimpering noise and walked away. Nene shook her head, and turned back around.
"Honestly... What was she thinking? Pico never even SPOKE to that chick." She thought to herself angrily. One of the students that helped decorate the gym with Nene approached their table.
"Did you help with the gym yesterday?" She asked.
Both Nene and Pico were looking at the student.
"Yes...?" Nene answered.
"There's one more thing that we need help with in there. Would you mind?" Asked the student.
Nene sighed again. She couldn't bring herself to say no.
"Not at all." She said.
After Nene was done helping with the gym, she asked Girlfriend where Pico was.
"On the rooftop with Darnell. Why?" Girlfriend replied.
"I'm doing it... I'm asking him!" Nene said.
"Well in that case, go for it!" Girlfriend exclaimed. Nene nodded and bolted towards the rooftop.
"I don't care..." She said through huffs, "If you say no..."
"It doesn't matter..." She breathed through pants, "If I embarrass myself in front of everyone...!"
"What's important is..." She managed to get out, "That I've gathered the courage to ask you!" Once she reached the roof, she prepared herself to ask Pico. "That's right... Even if you don't feel the same way---huh?" Nene saw Pico talking to Darnell.
"So you aren't taking anyone?" Asked Darnell.
"No... I guess school dances just aren't for me." Said Pico.
"I thought you were asking Nene, though...?" Darnell said, confused.
Nene listened closer to hear what Pico had to say after that.
"I would, but... I don't really feel comfortable around her." He said.
Nene gasped, and her whole world stopped. She clenched her heart, and covered her mouth as she began to cry. She ran all the way to the bathroom and cried in a stall. When she was done, her mind went blank, and she couldn't think of anything else. Those words went off in her head like a gong. Soon, her mind became overloaded with thoughts.
"Why would he say that? Did I do something wrong? What did I do?" She thought all at once. Nene could barely make it through the rest of the day. Darnell decided to walk home with Cassandra, and Nene felt crushed as Pico made another excuse for him not to be alone with her.
The last week before the dance went by very quickly. Before Nene knew it, the dance was one day away. She didn't talk to Pico or Darnell. She wasn't even angry at them; she just didn't want to make anyone "uncomfortable" like Pico said she did. Nene did tell herself that she would still go even if Pico rejected her, so she did.
