George's heart ached.
Whenever he found out what happened to Clay, his heart started beating incredibly fast. He wanted to be there as soon as possible. So he told his mother a brief explanation on what happened and she drove him straight to the hospital.
He practically ran through the hospital hallways, desperately trying to get to Clay. Finally, he found the room and looked at Clay. He felt heartbroken immediately.
Clay had bruises all over his face and his arms. He was unconscious with his mother holding his hand right next to him.
Clay's mother looked at George with a softened expression and basically read George's thoughts.
"He's going to be okay. No internal damage, no broken bones. He will feel better soon."
George was relieved. He looked over at his younger sister Drista who gave a small smile towards him.
Clay probably wouldn't wake up until the next morning so George waited there with his mother and sister the whole night. George was still very worried, constantly thinking that maybe he could've had internal damage that the doctor didn't see.
But Drista and his mother helped him keep distracted. Drista and George colored pictures together, Clay's mother told him about Clay's funny childhood stories, or he would just text one of his friends. Some of them planned on seeing Clay in the morning, but nobody could come that night.
The next morning George was exhausted but he wasn't going to leave until he could speak to Clay. He wanted to make sure he was feeling better, or else he would worry even more.
George was sitting with Drista on the couch whenever Clay's eyes opened. He immediately sat all the way up and was so ecstatic to finally see he was awake.
His mother wrapped him into a hug, crying tears of joy. George could tell that Clay didn't really have a clue where he was or what really happened.
Clay's mother explained to him where he was and that all he had was bruises. Clay nodded in response and then looked over at George and Drista who were now standing up behind his mother.
Clay smiled up at George while George gave a big smile back.
"Hey mom, can I have a moment alone with George please?"
She nodded and took Drista's hand. They walked into the hallway and now the two boys were alone.
"Clay, are you sure you're feeling alright?"
Clay gave a slight chuckle. "I'm fine, George. My dad just got into a bad mood again."
"If you don't mind me asking, what exactly happened?"
"Well," Clay started, "I heard my parents arguing downstairs and then I heard my mom not say anything. So I went downstairs to check it out and saw him beating her, and that's whenever I stepped in."
"Oh." George looked down to the floor, secretly despising Clay's father and also feeling distraught by what Clay, his mother, and his sister had to go through.
"But the good news is my mom's filing for divorce. We won't have to deal with him anymore. She also told the police and he's being put in jail."
George felt a sense of relief that Clay would hopefully never have to deal with his dad again. The two boys smiled at each other but Clay had a small tear coming down his cheek.
George wiped the tear off Clay's face using his thumb and Clay held George's hand to his jaw which surprised George. George didn't pull his hand back though, he let it rest there.
"Please don't leave for awhile," Clay begged.
George nodded and his hand still rested on Clay's jaw, the two boys staring at each other for what felt like forever.
The two boys finally distanced whenever Clay's sister bursted through the door, making both Clay and George jump. Drista gave out a chuckle and sat down on the couch. Her mom came in shortly after.
George texted his mother telling her that he was staying at the hospital for awhile, which she was perfectly fine with.
George actually liked being around Clay's family. He was never really around them before because of Clay's dad. They're actually really nice and funny.
Eventually, many of Clay's friends showed up. First it was Nick who made a lot of jokes and brightened up the room. Bad came in with chocolates for Clay. Tommy almost got kicked out of the hospital for being way too loud. Many football players came to be there for him, and even people Clay didn't really talk to.
All of his friends left soon after except for George. Clay wanted George to stay as long as possible, and George didn't mind it.
Clay, his family, and George all talked for awhile and tried to make Clay feel much better. The doctors wanted him to stay in the hospital a little longer to analyze the damage just in case.
Finally, Clay was able to leave the hospital completely healthy and feeling much better. He walked out with George right next to him beaming with joy. He didn't want George worried about him.
The four went to Clay's house to rest. Clay and George just talked and talked in Clay's room while Clay's mother and sister ended up falling asleep shortly after getting home. It really wasn't fun trying to sleep in a hospital.
"Why were you so worried about me, George?"
George thought that was a ridiculous question to ask. "Because I care about you."
Clay nodded in response. "Do you wanna play minecraft?"
"Alright," George agreed and Clay pulled out his xbox controllers. The two boys played for at least an hour before they both passed out on the bed.
George had to admit that Clay still looked rough. His bruises looked sickening. He honestly didn't want to see Clay like this. It was scary and George didn't like it one bit.
They woke up, both looking at different walls and forgot what they were even doing. Somehow their game was still going and they were both alive in their little dirt house.
Clay groaned and got out of bed. A few seconds later George left the bed too and they both went to the kitchen to find something to eat.
His mother was hovering over the counter with a worried expression on her face. When she noticed the boys, she stood up straight and gave a soft smile.
"I've got news," she said.
Clay's eyebrows perked up and George looked at the woman with open ears.
"We're moving out of this shit house. I can't stay here. All I think about is your dad, and I want him removed from my mind completely. And you were beaten in this very room," Clay's mother's tone got much softer and she sniffled. "I'm sorry Clay for not stopping him. I really should've-"
"Mom, don't apologize. He was in the wrong, not you." Clay interrupted her. "Where are we moving to? Hopefully not far from George, right?" Clay looked a bit worried, but his mother shook her head.
"We're not moving out of town. We just might move to the other side of it. My friend has a place we can rent out, starting this week. It's an absolute miracle."
George would've been so upset if Clay had to leave, but he understood why. Thankfully he wasn't leaving and they could still hang out constantly.
Clay thought this would be a great change. He was grinning from ear-to-ear, with his favorite people right there next to him. In a way he was glad that all this happened. Now his mom got away from that awful man and they could basically start over. No abuse, no arguing, no feeling scared.
This is what Clay wanted.
