I was done performing my Isha prayers when Aslam came home.
He had some bag in his hand which he carefully laid on the side table.
I eyed the bag with curiosity.
For a moment I felt as if he brought something for our daughter but then he opened his mouth, crushing the false hope that had creeped in my heart."It's a delivery for Kanpur. I have to leave tomorrow morning. Pack my bags." He ordered.
"So you won't be here tomorrow?" I queried.
"Didn't you hear what I said, how many times do I have to repeat myself?" He was seething.
"It's Bushra's birthday tomorrow." I told him.
He scoffed.
"I don't believe in celebrating a day which reminds us that we're moving close to death. It's just a waste of time and money." He grimaced before turning to me, "I would prefer to be at something productive then doing this nonsense at home. Westerners influence. Now just pack my bags, will you?"
He picked up his sticks and walked to his room.I sighed and reminded myself that nothing can change this man.
Why do I expect anything from him?
Without wasting much time, I followed him to his room.
He was on his bed, drinking me with his eyes as I stacked his clothes neatly in the small bag.
"It's been long since we.." He whispered.
I felt goosebumps erupt on my skin.
"I have packed your clothes. Is there any thing you want?" I said but bit my lip when I saw where he was standing.
He was too close and the distance between us made me extremely uncomfortable.
"I want you, Rabia." His voice was rough. I had lowered my gaze.
Before he could move, I interrupted him, "You should rest." I told him before he could make a move and stormed out instantly.
I heaved a sigh as I heard him slam the door behind me.
This is not the time! I reminded myself.
My daughter was doing her homework. Her face lit up immediately.
"Ammi, I've finished my work."
She showed me the book."Great! Are you hungry?" I asked her. My breathing was hoarse.
She shook her head, "No but some desserts won't hurt." She grinned and I laughed.
My heart always soared to see that elation on her face.
"Always a sweet tooth just like me." I pecked her forehead, "This reminds me, I bought some candies for your friends at school. Just distribute it during your recess."
"Okay." She chirped while keeping her book in the bag.
Atleast now when Aslam is leaving, I could see that there won't be any trouble tomorrow. I just hope.

It was early in the morning when Aslam left for Kanpur.
I was already up for the morning prayer and while he was getting ready, I prepared some breakfast for him.He didn't say anything much especially about yesterday and I was relieved.
I didn't wake my baby at midnight because she was in a deep slumber by then.
I carefully lifted the blanket off her face. Just by looking at her, my heart was soaring.
I smiled before kissing her temples, "Bushra, wake up baby."
