Life and Death

The funerals for the dead students were held in the clearing. They could have had the ceremony in the school. But the teachers and students had agreed that bidding the souls farewell for one last time would be best in the place they'd died in. All fires were distinguished and everything was set up in black. Black chairs were placed in neat rows and the number of caskets, laid at the front were draped with black lace. Tears streamed down many faces as they mourned for the dear loss of their fellow mates.

"Agatha. Sophie."

Agatha and Sophie turned to see Hester and Anadil standing in front of them, hand in hand. They were looking at one another with such...love in their eyes. Love. What a word that had been used quite so many times. However, the adoration in the girls' eyes were very strong, passionate and forever lasting.

"So you two are...?" Agatha made a gesture that strangely made the couple blush. Sophie watched in bewilderment. Hester and Anadil dating? So much happiness flooded through her heart. Hester and Anadil blushing? Not themselves at all.

"Yeah." Said Anadil.

"I guess I'll  be third wheeling!" Dot joined the huddled group, munching on a chocolate that looked a lot like a branch.

"Don't you like someone, Dot?" Agatha questioned. Dot shook her head, throwing the chocolate branch over her shoulder.

"Bleh. Tastes like tree. I don't like anyone and even if I did, who would like me?" Dot wasn't sad when she looked down at her plump self. She sounded as if she was merely acknowledging a fact.

"I'm sure someone will like you, Dot. Usually, people like others for their personalities, not for their looks." Sophie said very kindly. The usually unsentimental Dot teared up slightly at this. She'd thought Sophie liked guys for their looks. This suspicion came from Tedros. The good looking boy who Sophie seemed to like on the very first day, the very first second she saw him. But Dot had been  wrong. Sophie did not like people for their looks. She was not that crude.

"The ever girl is right, Dot. Listen to her." Said Hester and grinned at Sophie, halfway genuine. She was beginning to truly like Agatha's best friend. At first sight of her on the first day, she had thought that the girl was very stuck up and was probably glued to a mirror all the time since so many ever girls had been. But like Dot, Hester had assumed wrong. Sophie was an ever but did not torment the lives of nevers by showing off her great beauty. Instead, the beauty of her friendliness and bravery stood out. Even the friendliness, Hester would have found gross and cringe at others. But on Sophie, there was nothing bad about it. In fact, it was pretty great.

Sophie smiled back at the witch and went off to speak with Tedros who was standing nearby, alone.

"What are you thinking about?" She asked the prince who was thoughtfully gazing off into space. He came back to life with a jerk and chuckled.

"It's just I'm reminded of my dad. The funeral and everyone crying and all." He replied.

"I understand. I went to my mother's funeral when she died. It sort of felt like this, but minus the magic and the setting." Sophie's mind was full of pleasant memories of her beautiful mother. She thought of Vanessa whispering to her as she drifted off to sleep, and remembered what she had said to her when she died.

"You are too beautiful for this world" had been the weak yet tender whisper as her life went away. Stefan, her father, had not seemed to care as he went off to see the fat woman, Honora. Despite her unselfish heart, Sophie had hated the woman. She had hated the sweet tone Honora talked to her with. But she had been nice enough to the lady. She didn't show her disdain but simply pursed her lips at some times and pulled on fake smiles.
