“Do I really have to come?” I asked Laurel for the tenth time that night. Not that I was counting.

“Yes Lex, you're coming, don't ask again” she replied as she continued coating her face with layers of makeup.

I kept quiet as I watched her rub a brush in different makeup products and different shades then run the brush over her cheeks in upward motions. Sad thing is she'd been at it for almost an hour and after the basics, I couldn't notice anything different.

“Now get dressed so we can go. I'm almost done”

I looked down at the pair of jeans and black top I was currently wearing. A casual look but I figured it would work.

“But I am dressed” I said slipping into by black sneakers.

Laurel stopped dead in her tracks as she eyes me slowly. In one quick motion she dropped the lipstick in her hand and ran to me.

She gripped my shoulders painlessly but firmly. “Are you insane? Why would you dress like this to any party, no offense honey but that's way too... Well, causal. You've got the looks Lex, so let it show” she said pulling on the last word dramatically.

I rolled my eyes at her theatrics. I knew arguing with Laurel wouldn't get me anywhere. I did like dressing up, but not to actually go out. Yes sometimes I wanted to look pretty but lately I'd been keeping things really casual.

“What style are you thinking?” Laurel asked as she rummaged through my wardrobe. “It should be something that says I'm pretty as hell but don't you dare mess with me”

“Sure” I said absentmindedly.

“Hmm... Yes this is perfect! Try them on”

She tossed me a black leather mini skirt, a sleeveless white body hug with a sweetheart neckline and a black jacket with a diamond studded zipper that extended to the pockets. Then she put a pair of black ankle boots before me to match the clothes.

When it came to clothes, I was a little obsessed with boots and black leather jackets. Most of my shoes were boots I just felt like there was an edge they managed to add to like every outfit. And virtually all my jackets were black and a few were denim.

After I got dressed, I had to admit Laurel had great fashion sense. I looked exactly how she'd described. I sat in front of the mirror as I watched her style my hair.

“Now makeup!” she said happily.

I jumped out of the chair “No, no, no way, no make up. This already feels too much, its not my wedding”

“Well duh, what bride wears black to the alter. This is a party and 'too much,'” she said making air quotes, “is just right, now sit”

“You know I don't like makeup ”

Truthfully, I didn't like it, even on other people. At times it just seemed way too much to me and sometimes I did like it on others. But basically I wasn't nearly as obsessed with make up as I was with dark, leather clothing. Sure there was the occasional lip gloss and face powder but that was it.

“Oh you are such a kill joy but I promise you I'll get more than lip gloss on that face of yours someday ”

I laughed “You can try” she rolled her eyes as she packed up her makeup bag.

“Come on it's almost 8:00pm let's go”

Exams would begin next week and more than half the school thought it would be a great time for a party. I really don't understand how people think sometimes. Of course Laurel was making me go, she'd even somehow convinced Aiden. I don't know how she did it but those two seemed closer, like real friends.
