Thank God for the weekend nights at Magnolia Bar and Grill. Being this as my first Saturday I am now in the green with making actual money for myself. It's not yet nine and I've already made triple what I made during the week.
The amount of beer and mixed drinks I'm serving along side Fran reflects these patrons are practical fish. Even before the cocktail hits the bar top, I'm taking another drink order from another customer. It's the type of work I like, busy. The faster I work, the more fun it is. And, the quicker the night goes.
The continuous dark spiralling thoughts of Foxy momentarily halted by the continuous plugging away of lists of drinks, cocktail mixes, and who has a tab open.
The seconds I get while cashing someone out, I do take a chance to check my phone resting near the back register to see if Bash has texted me in return, but I find my phone empty of any notifications. I know it's coming, though.
I don't dwell on it, and return my attentions to the bar taking orders. I spot a familiar face in the packed restaurant section sitting in a booth with a woman across from him. Kimberly, the high school waitress, drops off two large plates fresh from the kitchen and places them in front of Professor Van Doren and a woman across from him.
"Hey, Fran, one of my school professors is here. Can I go say 'hey'?" I ask her as she holds an easy but fleeting conversation with a few guys at the end of the bar and gives me a thumbs up.
I lift the drop table, and scooch under it, then snake through the busy restaurant until I reach the booth where the professor and a pretty blonde woman in her forties sits.
He's dressed in a checkered flannel blue collared shirt with the sleeves folded up neatly to his elbows, while the woman is dressed in a black cocktail dress. Her attire surprises me considering they are eating dinner here, but I smile politely at him as I approach.
Van Doren doesn't immediately recognize me and continues chatting with the woman until I reach the table and he looks at me expecting me to ask him how his food is, then it registers quickly across his face, "Oh, Ms. Lewis," He smiles then glances to the woman, who I see has a rather large rock on her left ring finger.
"Hi, Professor, I saw you while I was working the bar so I thought I'd come over and say 'hi'." And it can't hurt to be friendly after I've been a constant interuption in his class.
Shit, I interrupt his class and now I'm interrupting his dinner. Way to go, Aspen!
"You work here?" He asks, then holds out his palm to the woman across from him before I can answer, "Denise, this is one of my students, Aspen Lewis. Ms. Lewis, this is my wife Denise."
"Hi," I smile and glance at their plates but refrain from making any comments, I'm immediately regretting interrupting them but Van Doren quickly adds, "Denise and I love to sample all the Gumbo from the local restaurants, we hadn't yet tried this one."
