ALEX'S POV

Sam and I are bathed in fanatical lights as the back double doors of Royal Woods High swing out upon our departure. As my eyes adjust to the sudden, vibrant light, I blink rapidly. Once, twice... then suddenly, everything becomes clear.

There's police cars, two of them. The flashing blue and red lights are active. If colors could scream, these would surely be the loudest.

"Sam!" A shrill voice calls. I instinctively let go of Sam's hand, which I had grabbed onto amidst our mad dash down the deserted school hallway. A blonde-haired woman is rushing our way. She scoops her daughter within her arms, kissing her face hard enough to leave a mark. Cradling the young woman to her chest, a muffled sob issues from the mother.

"Sam, baby, you scared me. I had no idea where any of you went." Mrs. Sharp coos, turning my way to acknowledge me.

"Hey, honey." The mother sweeps a hand through my hair, tucking the green strands behind my ear.

Suddenly, she's drawing me into a hug, and a firm one at that.

Wow, this woman gives amazing hugs, is all I can fathom before Mrs. Sharp has deposited me back onto the ground.

"Mrs. Loud called me asking about Luna." Mrs. Sharp begins to ramble with evident concern. "Turns out she was texting Luna all throughout the night asking if she had gotten her history assignment done, but Luna never responded."

The woman conjures a deep inhale before continuing. "So, s-she called me to ask if everything was alright with her daughter, to which I responded 'isn't Sam at your house with Luna?'" Mrs. Sharp is on the verge of sheer collapse now as she recounts her story.

"I called and called you, Sam, honey, a-and you're always so good about responding to my calls, but this time you didn't..." Mrs. Sharp gasps.

"I-I know I shouldn't have, but I assumed the worst. Like you got abducted or-or something, so we called the police and they began a search." Mrs. Sharp states.

Sam seems overwhelmingly concerned and taken aback by her mother's insistent behavior. Though Mrs. Sharp has always been prone to being overprotective, she's also good about maintaining a laid-back attitude. It seems that that was all thrown at the window the moment her daughter was reported to be missing.

"The police assumed that you might be at the school, cause, I don't know, a lot of kids like to sneak onto school property at night. It-it was a theory nonetheless, so we went with it." Mrs. Sharp sniffles, wiping at her eyes. Her makeup dealt the most damage; her eyeliner has now become a black, liquid eye shadow.

"We didn't think... you'd actually be here." Mrs. Sharp whimpers, frowning down at the two of us.

Though Mrs. Sharp isn't my mother, I feel incredibly guilty, as if it's my job to ensure that she's happy. Maybe I was just so prone to being the caretaker for my own mother. It seems that such actions rubbed off on me.

"Alex!" A deep voice cries, and suddenly, I'm grabbed from behind. My father locks me into a firm embrace, dragging me away from the chaos. He releases me after a long, drawn out hug. Sully is there, and he likely didn't escape the hugs as well.

"What the hell were you doing in there?" My father asks, aggressively gesturing towards the looming, close-to-empty school.

Crap! Michelle and Doug are still in there. What if they hear the commotion outside? I think anxiously.
