LUNA'S POV

The moment I stepped within my mom's car, departing from the bright colored police lights and impending loom of the school, I was met with an onslaught of texts from the Moon Goat's group chat.

Mazzy: I SAW MICHELLE AND DOUG!!

Mazzy: THEY WERE THERE!! STARING AT US THROUGH THE WINDOW!

Sam: Are you sure, Mazzy??

Mazzy: DEADLY SERIOUS. Alex can back me up.

Though such an allegation seems unlikely, I believe my bandmate. Some weird and crazy things have occurred tonight, and that certainly wouldn't be the first.

I click off my phone, the bright screen imprinted into my vision as the darkness of the car encapsulates me.

I went out like a light upon returning home. My siblings begged for answers, practically climbing over one another to get a word in, but my mother ushered them away. She escorted me up the stairs and to my vacant bedroom, waiting for me to climb up into bed.

However, she doesn't leave. She stands there expectantly, as if awaiting an explanation regarding everything that occurred tonight. I don't think I can tell her. I probably never can.

"Luna, honey..." My mother begins after a brief silence. "You don't have to tell me what happened tonight."

Such a comment leaves me puzzled, and I don't respond briefly, awaiting more on my mom's end.

"Just as long as you're ok... you don't have to tell me what's happening right now." Rita coos, shuffling towards the door. The rings under her eyes are accentuated from recent events, and her fear is evident as we share this conversation.

"I was just...very scared the moment I heard from Amanda about your disappearance," Rita states, referring to Mrs. Sharp. "I want to make sure my children trust me, but at the same time... have the privacy that every teen deserves."

Rita places her hand upon my bedroom door knob in preparation to exit, but I clear my throat meekly.

"Mom." I croak, and my mother turns from the doorway, eyes gleaming with hope.

"I don't know when or-or how, but I promise... I promise I'll tell you everything soon enough." I sigh, and the relief that crosses my mother's features is noticeable in stark comparison to the anxiety swamping her expression.

"That-That means a lot, honey. You sleep well, ok? I love you." Rita murmurs, turning off the light, and departing.

"Good night, mom. I love you too." I murmur back, and the door closes with a soft click.

Without even intending to, my friends and I find ourselves in the same place the next morning. Principal Rivers' office.

The news of what occurred last night spread like wildfire, as gossip usually tends to do in a highschool environment. Though nobody (aside from us) truly knows what occurred at the school, that leaves room for speculation and an insane abundance of rumors.

Some students are led to believe that we went scavenging for the teacher's copy of the Biology test's answer key. Others are conjuring stories of a dead student locked in the file room or decomposing in the school vents. Alex seemed unnerved by that last rumor, but they leaned down to quickly whisper "the vent story is true; I was a witness" into a kid's ear. Needless to say, the color drained from their face to an unnerving degree.
