LUNA'S POV
It's been two weeks since the ordeal in the band room, and Sully and I are finally growing to be on good terms again. Every day since Alex's arrival, I've refused to dwell on the fact that I've been replaced. However, now is the time to discuss such matters, seeing how Alex and I can't continue to share the same roles in the band for the entirety of the year. So, we began the trial of determining what roles Alex and I should be placed in this semester to ensure that we're both contributing to the band.
I didn't argue. I was personally not in the mood to engage in friendly "bickering". Alex, on the other hand, was trying to persuade the group to keep me and remove them until next year. "It's only fair." I heard them say on numerous occasions. Occasionally, one of my bandmates would question me about the situation, to which I'd reply with "I vote on keeping Alex." By the end of the rehearsal, we'd be back to square one, our minds having not yet grasped a solution.
Only mere hours after having had that discussion, I recall getting a notification from the group chat. Turns out that a final decision had been made to keep both Alex and I within the band this year.
Due to the recent decision, the band has gotten to work on writing song lyrics that incorporate another instrument for Alex's benefit. We're all aware of the responsibility required to achieve such acts, but we have complete faith in one another.
As I get to work on constructing a list of the many words that rhyme with "you", a figure approaches me. It's Alex.
"Hey, dude." I say in greeting before turning my notebook to face them. "Do you think I've nailed all the words that rhyme with 'you'?" Alex scrutinizes my paper for a moment. "Kazoo." They finally state, nodding their head with confidence. "Ooo, clever." I praise, jotting down the word in my songwriting notebook.
"Luna." Alex states from in front of me, and I glance up, unsure what to expect from them. Their features have softened considerably, and amid their usual confidence is an air of nervousness.
"I need to tell you something." They state, and without waiting for a reply of confirmation, they're beckoning me towards the band room doors. "Come with me."
Undeniably curious, I follow, eyebrow raised. Alex leads me through the school's back doors and down the lush, green lawn of the soccer field. The grass leaves little droplets of water upon my boots, and the unquestionable scent of moist earth lingers in my nostrils. Finally, we reach the bleachers fencing the soccer field. Alex seats themselves, patting a spot beside me on the bench. I accept the invitation, the cold metal seats sending a shiver down my spine. I allow myself to stare out across the expansive soccer field, the grass still coated with dew from the morning.
I turn to look at my bandmate. Their gaze remains on the expanse of trees in the distance, features contemplative. I bite down the urge to question them. Don't push it, Luna.
After a brief moment, Alex's gaze lands to their feet. "Right. I was going to tell you something." They sigh to themselves, as if they have forgotten the purpose of why we are convening in private. "I'm sorry, this is really hard for me to say." The sudden grief in their voice shakes me to my core and heightens my concern.
Aside from the handful of moments that linger within my subconscious, I can't seem to recall Alex ever being in such a despondent mood. It scares me more than anything.
"I understand." I murmur. "Take your time." A part of me understands where this conversation is going, yet I don't feel the pleasure of receiving answers like I thought I would. Seeing Alex like this, someone I've grown to love and respect as a person, distills a sadness within me that I would have never thought possible a few weeks ago.
