LUNA'S POV
The lawn of the Royal Wood's High football field is wet with dew as the five of us dash across the expansive lawn. Wet grass clings to my purple boots, and Sam's hand remains clutched in mine.
The five of us finally stop in the center of the lawn, doubled over and gasping for breath. The info sheet ripples loudly in the wind. Though we're no longer running, the confrontation is far from over.
A sharp, maniacal laugh drifts across the lawn, followed by the slam of the school's double doors.
Michelle and Doug are disheveled from the frantic chase, yet they're sporting amused smiles at having caught the teens.
I stand my ground. Mostly because my chest is burning too much to even consider running again. However, I also know that I need to settle this. Once and for all. The only way to do that is to face Michelle and Doug head-on.
"Aw, you kids have nowhere to run, do you?" Michelle snickers as her and Doug approach us.
"Kinda idiotic to choose the open football field, but maybe you guys are ready to confess to your mistake?" Doug asks, splaying his arms out in a gesture that seems to say "consider my idea".
That's the last thing I'm gonna do though. I've made my decision, and I'm sure as hell not going to be swayed.
Doug goes to take another step forward, but I thrust a firm hand in front of me. The man immediately stops his approach, his mocking smile quickly morphing into a frown.
"Don't take a step closer." I say firmly.
Michelle seems prepared to approach us as well, but a voice issues from my right, halting her in her tracks.
"Aléjense, imbéciles." Mazzy snarls, and I can deduce what she's trying to say, though I don't speak any Spanish myself.
Michelle and Doug don't take kindly to the insult. They scowl in our direction, hands clenched tight enough to stain their knuckles white.
"If you take even so much as a step closer, I'll rip your precious signature to shreds." I scowl back at them, the info sheet clutched tightly in my fist.
Michelle and Doug have no plans of advancing any further, especially once the threat is fired at them. It's evident that such a threat distills fear in them, and Doug extends a hand towards us.
"Please. Don't do anything to it." Doug pleads, and it catches me off guard to hear the man's plea. It feels... rewarding, yet altogether discomforting to be sending an adult into pleads.
It's come to this, hasn't it? I reflect, swallowing hard.
"Dudes, calm down. You could just print another one." Alex says smugly, shrugging their shoulders as if their pronouncement is the obvious solution. Michelle and Doug seem outraged by Alex's smartass attitude; I'm certain that I, quite literally, hear Michelle growl under her breath.
"I don't appreciate your attitude, young... child." Michelle snaps. Alex, amused at the lack of a gendered label, chuckles under their breath. Michelle doesn't appreciate being laughed at, it seems, and she clears her throat angrily.
Michelle and Doug know that, if anything were to damage the paper clutched in my hand, their position of power within the school would be lost. Without Ms. V to sign the new document--and it's highly unlikely that she would now, seeing how much they've abused their power--Michelle and Doug would have no way of leading the Royal Rumble.
My hand, which once held Sam's warm one, experiences a sudden chill. Puzzled, I watch as my girlfriend releases my hand. I expect her to step forward in a display of valence, maybe call out Michelle and Doug for their horrendous behavior, but she does the opposite. Instead, I watch as Sam dashes down the expansive lawn towards the sound and video booth. Thrown off by the sudden chill that meets my hand, I clench it into a fist.
