LUNA'S POV
I'm quick to tell Sam my experience from that morning upon arriving at school.
"...and I know she's barely over one year old, but it felt good to get it off my chest." I finish stating, and Sam nods her head in understanding. "I just have this feeling that all my sibs will accept me, so I'm never sure as to why I have to come out to them." I continue, and Sam smiles.
"I'm glad that you feel that way about your siblings, Luna." Sam begins, and her face instantly changes to that of her "but you know why you need to come out" face.
"By coming out, you're allowing your family to understand you more." Sam continues, and a small frown tugs at my lips.
"Yeah, but I feel like the younger my siblings are, the harder it is to come out to them." I state. Sam raises an eyebrow in curiosity; her way of saying "elaborate". "Why would you say that?" She questions, and I shrug feebly.
"I don't know." I reply, slightly exasperated. "They ask a lot of questions, and I feel like I'm being interrogated." I hear Sam giggle from beside me before I continue.
"Why does it have to be so hard?" I question the air. "Like, I wish I could approach Lana and Lola and say 'hey, yo, Dudes, I'm bisexual and dating a girl!' And then have them be like: 'woohoo that's great, we respect that!' End of story."
Sam suppresses a giggle, rolling her eyes playfully. "It's never gonna be that easy, Lunes." She wraps a comforting arm around me, rubbing my side. "Besides, it's good that they're asking questions. It means that they care to know about you."
There is undoubtedly no way to disagree with Sam, so I sigh and lean against her.
"I love you, you know that, right?" I question, and Sam smiles, pulling me closer within our embrace. "I love you too, baby." She replies, kissing the top of my head.
It feels amazing to spend the remaining twenty minutes before class wrapped in a tight hug with Sam. This moment of comfort is put to a stop however, when, five minutes before first class, something catches my eye.
It's Alex, and they're walking directly past us with their nose buried in their phone. Such behavior reminds me of my sister, Lori, but for Alex, such actions are abnormal.
Sam takes notice as well, and the two of us begin waving our hands frantically and shouting our bandmate's name. It's obvious that Alex is ignoring us, for they refuse to look our way. The only looks we get are from our fellow peers in the hallway, so Sam and I quiet down. We flash one another a dispirited look, quietly questioning Alex's behavior.
This strange behavior--much to my curiosity--persists throughout the day. There were many moments during class when Alex would be seated beside me, head bowed and undoubtedly holding back unwanted tears. Occasionally, I'd place a hand on their shoulder and ask if they're ok, to which they'd shrug off my physical contact, murmuring an "I'm fine".
I confide in Sam my concern regarding Alex, and--unsurprisingly--Sam recommends that I give them some space. Seeing no other option, I choose to follow Sam's advice, only flashing Alex a glance here and there.
It's as I'm setting up all the equipment needed for after school band rehearsals with Mazzy and Sam (Sully hadn't arrived at school today) that Alex enters the band room, their posture small and fidgety. When they speak, it isn't with their usual enthusiasm.
