Ever since becoming a mermaid, Lily's world had expanded tremendously. She had lived in the small beachside town of Malenia all her life. While she hadn't minded that since it gave her plenty of opportunities to swim around, it wasn't until she was able to swim further out into the ocean that she realized just how small her world had really been. And she had found two great friends in the form of Marie and Emma, who she could explore the ocean with at their leisure.
Of course, their world had also gotten just a tad more dangerous as mermaids.
"Is it gone yet?" Emma asked, hiding with her two mermaid friends under a coral reef.
Lily poked her head out. The second her eyes saw the large grey body of the shark swimming around, she immediately ducked back out of sight. "Nope. It's still there."
"Oh I knew this was a bad idea." Emma whined. "I don't want to get eaten."
"Don't worry. We'll be fine so long as we stay hidden." Marie assured her.
It had been just another normal day swimming around in the sea. It was currently the weekend, so the three girls had all day to enjoy rather than just a couple hours after school let out on a weekday. But of course, their fun time had been ruined when they caught sight of a shark swimming their way. They quickly hid themselves like all of the fish in the area, not liking the idea of ending up in the carnivorous beast's stomach.
Another minute passed by before Lily poked her head out again. Unlike the other times she checked however, she didn't see the shark this time around.
"I think it finally left." Lily told them.
Emma let out a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness. I was terrified it was going to find us."
"It's a good thing it was just a regular shark and not a mershark." Marie said. "Mersharks are a lot smarter. But normal sharks are dumb and-" Marie stopped short when she glanced to the side and widened her eyes. She let out a scream. "AHHHHH! SWIM FOR IT!"
Lily and Emma quickly followed Marie's gaze and saw the shark closing in on them. They both screamed along with Marie as all three mermaids swam out of their hiding spot, just barely avoiding a chomp from the shark.
The three of them swam as fast as they could while the shark chased after them. Thankfully, they were faster swimmers than the predator so they were gradually putting more and more distance between them.
As they swam through some seaweed, Emma felt her tailfin get caught. She tried to pull herself free, but it was too tangled. "Help! I'm stuck!"
Lily and Marie turned around and saw Emma's predicament. To make matters worse, the shark was quickly getting closer to her.
"Oh no!" Marie exclaimed.
Lily made a beeline for Emma as she flopped her tailfin. She swam as fast as she could, praying to get there before the shark. Lily had to make it in time. She just had to.
Emma tried as hard as she could to free herself, but to no avail. She shivered in fear as the shark came closer, opening its jaws to gobble her up whole. Emma closed her eyes and let out a scream of pure terror.
"AHHHHHHHH!"
"Gotcha!"
At the very last second, Lily tackled Emma to the side, both of them avoiding the sharp teeth of the shark. Instead, the shark's teeth ripped through the seaweed trapping Emma.
It took Emma a second to realize that she was still alive, her life having flashed before her eyes a second ago. Lily grabbed her by the arm and began swimming as fast as she could. Emma soon snapped out of her daze and began flicking her own tailfin as well to get away.
