Lacey screamed, writhing and kicking under his ice cold grasp.
"Calm down!" He seethed. When she didn't relax, he tightened his grip slightly, sighing as if she bored him.
"I'm saving your ass and this is how you thank me? Humans!" he scoffed. Lacey relaxed slightly, staring up at him with confused eyes.
"Saving me?" Lacey tried to ask. Instead, it came out sounding like garbled English.
"I'll take my hand off your mouth only if you promise not to scream," Theo hissed. Lacey nodded, muttering the words "I promise." He released his grip on her.
"How are you saving me?" Lacey asked, more venom leaking into her words than she intended.
"You were about to meet a complete stranger in the pub. Well, a stranger to you," he clarified, peeking around the corner of the restaurant. When he saw Isaiah, he cussed loudly.
"Damn! I had hoped he was a messenger. Ah, well, this complicates things," Theo mused with a grin that looked like it could kill small animals. Lacey shuddered, drawing her arms around herself.
"What do you mean? What's a messenger?" Lacey asked. "And you didn't write the message on my mirror?"
"Of course not. I only write in blood. It's my trademark," Theo declared, waggling his fingers as if to explain. Lacey felt the sudden urge to vomit. When he saw her face, he sighed again.
"Okay, okay. A messenger is sort of like a half Nephilim. They have half human blood and half angel blood, so they are sent on heavenly errands and such. Poor bastards, probably have the worst job in the world." He mused, looking around the corner again.
"And that is most certainly not a messenger." Theo accused, pointing a sharp finger at Isaiah. Lacey felt her blood grow cold.
"What is he then?" Lacey whispered. Theo shot an accusatory glance at her.
"Don't you know? He's an angel," Theo explained. Lacey's eyes widened in shock. There were such things as Angels? Lacey heard car tires squeal, and a familiar Ford Explorer sidle up to the curb. Asher jumped out of the drivers side so fast, Lacey was sure he hadn't been wearing a seatbelt.
"Where is she?" Asher demanded.
"Calm down. She's inside," Isaiah began to say. Asher pushed past him, stepping out of Lacey's line of vision. Lacey only knew he entered the restaurant because of the small bell chiming as the door opened.
"And that would be our cue to leave," Theo decided. He took her hand and led her to a ladder, allowing her to climb to the roof of the building.
"Why are you helping me?" Lacey seethed. An old saying suddenly popped into her mind.Know thy enemy.
"It's all part of the grand scheme of things, don't you worry," Theo grinned. He leaned over the front edge of the building, watching as Asher slammed the door open.
"She's NOT THERE!" he screeched. "The woman said she was looking outside and she just left."
"I had no idea-" Isaiah choked out. Asher shoved him against the side of the building, his arm against Isaiah's throat.
"What did you tell her!?" He yelled.
"Nothing! Nothing! She thinks you cheated on her! Maybe she left when she saw your Explorer," Isaiah offered. Asher seemed to loosen his grip slightly.
"She thinksI cheated on her?" Asher choked out. Lacey watched in awe, realizing Asher was either actually surprised, or one hell of an actor
"That lying bastard!" Lacey whispered before she could stop herself. Theo yanked her backwards before they leaned over the railing again. Asher slowly backed away from Isaiah, rubbing his temples slowly.
