Chapter Fifteen

Lacey tried to breathe, but her chest was heavy with anxiety. She thumbed to the next page, her vision swimming. On it was everything about her- her date of birth, her history, her favorite color. Everything about her entire life was listed on this sheet of paper. She read through every single page. She came across the accident, reading through it with blurry eyes. He literally knew everything about her. When she found the last page, her throat grew dry. It had only a few sentences on it. Those words alone were enough to make her world stop. It read, Get as close to the suspect as possible. Your mission is to guard and protect. I will see you as soon as possible. Much love, Donna. Not only was Asher assigned to her somehow, but he was also cheating on her!

Just then Leo wandered into the room. When he saw what Lacey was holding, his eyes widened.

"Asher! She's found it! She knows! Asher!" He yelled. Lacey dropped the dossier back into the nightstand, saying a silent prayer.

"Lacey, lets just go downstairs," Leo leveled. Lacey jumped off of the bed, lashing a kick to Leo's stomach. Surprised, he jumped backward, doubling over in pain. Lacey knocked him against the wall, and he slumped against the ground, completely unconscious. She said a silent apology to him, knowing he hadn't meant any harm. Lacey heard footsteps advancing up the stairs, and Lacey panicked, taking the first thing she found- the little brown book. She lifted the window. Lacey looked back into the room grimly, knowing there was nothing left for her there. Without another look back, she leaped out of the window into the night sky.

Lacey hit the ground with a world shattering thud. She felt her ankle shriek in pain, but she stood up anyways, looking around for means of escape. She headed in the general direction of the road before stopping. She had no means of transportation or money. She looked back at the house regretfully. Where would she go? Lacey heard people congregating in Asher's room, and she acted on her first impulse. She entered back into the house through the front door, making her way into the servant's quarters. She found Mirna easily.

"Please, you have to help me!" Lacey begged. In a rush, she explained what had happened with Asher and Leo.

"I'll go get your suitcase, then?" Mirna asked. Lacey nodded vigorously.

"Alright, wait here," Mirna promised, delivering a kiss to Lacey's forehead. She disappeared out of the room. Jane entered and sat beside her on the couch.

"That was odd. It isn't like Mirna to be so accepting," Jane mused. When Lacey said nothing, Jane played a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"Hey, don't worry. If I was in your position is do the same thing." Jane promised. Just then, Lacey heard two sets of footsteps descending the stairs. Lacey looked at Jane, panicking already. Jane moved her to the closet, shutting the doors on her. Jane then moved so she was laying sprawled out on the floor.

"Lacey?" Mirna called, lugging her suitcase into the room.

"Jane? What on Earth are you doing on the floor?" Mirna gasped. Lacey peeked through the closet doors, watching as Asher stepped into the room.

"She- she beat me! Like I was some kind of punching bag!" Jane lied. Mirna let out a gasp. Lacey knew it wasnt a far fetched lie, but she still held her breath as she awaited their responses. Asher stepped into the room, surveying Jane on the floor. Lacey couldn't help but notice his eyes were bloodshot. A war broke out inside of Lacey. One half of her yearned to go touch him, to reassure him that she wasn't mad. The other half screamed bloody murder. She had done so much for him. Never had she been angry at him when she should have. She remained blindly faithful in him, even though she knew he would never tell her what he was. Her insides seemed to be churning in turmoil.
