SUNNY DAYS MOTEL, 7 HOURS LATER

Lacey felt the sun shine brightly into her eyes. As she awoke, she felt memories slowly trickle back into her mind, leaking inside like a wave of emotion. She remembered seeing Asher, but he had never come back. Lacey shot out of bed before calming herself down. He probably just needed some sleep, or she was so tired she hadn’t woken up. She turned over to go back to sleep, but she rolled on top of something crinkly. She yanked it out from beneath her instantaneously. It was a piece of paper, addressed to her. She felt her world lurch to a halt. She read the letter seven or eight times, trying to get it through her head.

Lacey screamed, her world shaking with tears and pain. He was gone. The one person who mattered to her was dead. Lacey slid to the ground, her throat choking up with salty tears. She found her way into the bathroom, intending to make it all go away. She found the bottle of ibuprofen Aida had given her, readying herself. She poured what must have been twenty pills into her hand, feeling her entire body shake drastically. She held the pills to her mouth. At that very moment, Isaiah burst through the window, running quickly into the bathroom.

“Lacey! Don’t,” he warned, panting from the bout of exertion he had put himself through to get here on time.

“Why? Why shouldn’t I!?” Lacey screamed.

“I can help,” was all he said in response.
