It was midnight. All night I'd been dancing with Damien, my friends, Teddy... even Jamie, at intervals where I was so bored I needed to be annoyed. I was actually enjoying myself, and I didn't usually like parties.

I searched through the crowd, trying to find Damien as the DJ played 'Shake, rattle and roll'. I found him dancing with Teddy, who looked to be enjoying herself. I was just too tired, and really needed some sleep.

"Damien!" I called over the music. He smiled at me and shouted "what?"

"I'm going to bed!" I screamed, and he smiled and nodded.

He's being too nice, I thought. Maybe he's drunk?

I hugged Teddy and went up to my room. Macy was laid on her bed, sprawled all over and snoring loudly. Cat was still downstairs.

I changed into my nightgown and was about to go to sleep when Jamie walked in. I glared. Damn it, why did these nightgowns show so much?

"there's such a thing as knocking?" I questioned him. "ever heard of it?"

"yes," he smirked. "Just can't be bothered." and then, to my complete an utter shock, he kissed me. I immediately pulled back. What was he doing? I didn't like him in that way, didn't he notice?

"Jamie, I'm sorry, I can't. I don't... want too. Please just try and not do this."

Jamie stepped back, a look of pure hurt on his face. "you passed," he muttered, before walking out and gently shutting the door.

I wanted to run after him and shout in his ear 'I PASSED WHAT?!' but I knew it was meant to be a secret, and even if I did run after him he'd just stay quiet and eventually slam the door in my face.

Plus, if I ran around in this stupid nightdress Damien would no doubt appear, and thank the gods I was not running around in this thing.

So I just slammed the door, heated and angry because how dare he run off when he knew he'd confused me and knew I wouldn't run after him like some kind of undead teen? Urg...

I slammed the covers over me, my head burning up and my body tense, but I was tired and my vision blacked out as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Jamie's POV

It was cold. Even though I was running on wet grass I ignored it, because inside I felt warm. My bodyguards hadn't noticed my smooth escape - I needed to be on my own, why did they have to follow me everywhere?

Father had been murdered, only 2 months ago on a business trip in Rio De Janeiro, and because of this mother had been put in charge. She worried loads, and Damien was acting like king now. All he needed was a potential Queen and he could become king.

I scowled. Damien, as king. Didn't that feel wrong? He couldn't be king, he didn't know how. I may of only been 18, but I knew more about being king then Damien did.

I smiled as I remembered why I was even here, as I saw the lodge with it's flashing lights and porch.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me, so I spun around and was shocked to see a man, grinning.

"a royal, alone in a forest and defenceless. I'll get lots of money for this," he whispered.

I was only young, vampires age twice as fast as humans, and it only takes half a year for us the have a birthday - but I knew what I was doing. I concentrated, and heard screaming.

My power of mind, for being in the royal family, just HAPPENED to be setting people on fire. Well, the fire element, basically. It was tradition to have 4 children, so they could each have an element - Damien's was water, Catherine's earth. Our dead sister, Serafina, had air - but she was dead.

It was very dangerous to have more than 4 children - the royal family was top on the hunters lists, and any 5th child wouldn't get a power.

"you know better than to take on a royal alone," I snarled as he slowly started to turn to ash.

He snarled right back. "some day, you'll be whipped out. This ridiculous tradition will stop, our people want be taken to become slaves!"

I watched as he died, proud of his life, and felt slightly ashamed. I'd never been a fan of Vampinesta Portrafina, and I'd just killed this innocent man... but what could I do? What was I thinking? How was he innocent? He had millions of vampire's blood on his hands!

I shook my head, trying to forget what I had done, and began to run to the lodge as the wind picked up his ashes. I reached the lodge, and was shocked to find her leaving, she'd packed her bags and was LEAVING.

"Danielle! What's wrong? Where are you going?" I asked, hoping that what I feared wasn't true.

"what are you?" I stood stock still at the question, and stuttered: "I..."

"you lied to me!" she screamed, kicking a can by the floor into the forest, and I shuddered when I heard it hit the tree, hard.

"you lied to me, telling me all this time you loved me... and you're a frickin' vampire! What are you gonna tell me now, 'thank you for the blood, now be on your way'? Like you didn't do anything wrong? Did you even CARE about me, Jamie? Hell, is that even you're real name?" she glared, and I gulped.

"I do love you, Danielle! I always loved you! Always will! Please don't go - I LOVE you, Danielle!"

"well I don't love you anymore," she snarled, and picked up her baggage. "even if I still did, I couldn't be with you. Vampires aren't the friends of Hybrids," and with that, she transformed into a bat with a gust of wind, her bag turned into a tiny one rested on her wing, and she flew away.

She was a hybrid? I ran back through the grass, on my way back to the castle. I hadn't cried - I'd been too upset to cry. I'd just ran, seeking the comfort of the only one I knew would - mother.

My lover had been a hybrid. And now she was gone.
