10. Injuries & presents.

As he went in Sarah was sitting at the kitchen island, watching Sam and Zemo argue over something.
"So, what are we arguing about now?" Bucky said announcing his presence.
"We're not arguing James, merely a discussion. One that doesn't matter. Now, what would we like for dinner?" Zemo replied with a smirk to Sam.
"I don't mind, you guys got opinions? What do the boys like?" Bucky asked Sam and Sarah, walking around the counter to pull Zemo back against his chest.
"Uhhhh, they'll eat anything with pasta." Sarah said with a grin.
"How about chicken and pasta, I'm pretty sure there's both in the fridge?" Bucky said to his boyfriend
"Okay, quick and easy too. We should wrap kj's presents while they're outside you know." Zemo replied
"Yeah, we're probably safe to do it here, she took them to see the treehouse so I'm pretty sure we have a while." Bucky told him, pulling away to go get the bag they hid in the pantry.
"Oh, sammy will you go out and bring in the bags in my jeep?" Sara asked turning to her brother.
"Man, I'm always getting sent to do the lifting around here. Buck and kJ are the ones with the super strength you know?" Sam shot back
"She's your niece, use those captain America muscles" Sarah said with a teasing grin
"Oh okay, I see how this is. I'll be back." He said pointing at her as he backed away and out the open doors.

The three of them grinned at each other shaking their heads at their brothers behaviour.
"So, did you get everything you wanted for kJ when we left? Oh your card Zee" Sarah asked, taking the card out of her bag next to her and sliding it across the counter to Zemo.
"Thank you, yes we got everything. Though I imagine she'll be overwhelmed, we wanted to do this for her. My contact dropped off the papers just before you got back too." Zemo said grinning. Bucky set a roll or wrapping paper on the counter, a blue and lilac geometric design, then started getting things out of the big Apple store bag he put down. Sam came back in with the 3 big target bags,
"Want these in her room?" He asked looking at Bucky and Zemo
"Yes, thank you Samuel, second door on the left of the right hallway, if you don't mind." Zemo replied with a smile
"Man, one day I'm gonna get you to stop calling me that." Sam said going up the stairs
"But Samuel, how will I annoy you otherwise." Zemo said grinning
"That's cold, that's real cold Helmy." Sam replied with a chuckle. Bucky burst out laughing while Zemo scowled at sams back as he disappeared up the stairs.

Sarah grinned at the two men in front of her, watching as they wrapped Karli's presents.
"Sarah, would you frame these while we do this please?" Zemo asked sliding 3 photo frames, the adoption certificate and a photo over to her.
"Sure.... is this? Luca?" She asked softly looking at the photo of an obviously young Karli maybe 5 or 6 sitting on the lap of an older boy, making him 12 or 13, both grinning. He had slightly darker skin than her, the same freckles and bright ginger curls, the same grin on his face. He was hugging her tight, arms around her middle.
"Yes. I got a contact to find a photo after kJ said she wishes she had one. He got in contact with an old foster care case worker in England and she found it in an old file, it's from a scheduled visit they had, they took the photo hoping to use it to get someone to adopt them to keep them together.  It obviously didn't work but... I hope she likes it." Zemo said quietly, smiling softly at Sarah, and Sam who had come down and was looking at the photo over his sisters shoulder.
"Jesus, they sure looked alike. I think she'll love it man." Sam said looking at Zemo with a smile.
"We figure we'd put it in that frame and she can put it in her room, we got copies too, we'll see if she wants to put one anywhere else around the house." Bucky said smiling
As Sarah put it in the smaller white photo frame.
"She'll love it." Sarah said softly. She took the adoption certificate out of the envelope, making a confused face when she saw there were two, but that answered the question of why there were 2 A4 frames in front of her.
"Oh my god" Sarah said softly looking at both certificates and then up to Bucky and Zemo, who were leaning against each other.

"The old case worker, she told my contact that one time when Karli was just in the system, 4 years old, a couple wanted to adopt her. They took her home and thought it would be great. They brought her back 3 days later. She hadn't slept, or eaten anything. She took the paints they brought her and painted on the walls of their living room while they slept, and she completely destroyed her bedroom. She screamed and cried for Luca the whole time. When her social worker asked her why she did it she said if she gets adopted, it's going to be with Luca. She's not having a family without him, after that no one even enquired because it was out on her record. We still want that for her, we can't take that away just because he's not here." Bucky explained as Sam and Sarah stared at the 2 pieces of paper. One read
