I like making bread. I specially like the kneading part when the dough comes together to give the smooth texture. The gluten gets stretched and pounded on till there is this smooth texture to the earlier amorphous solid. Bread is a staple food in many countries. Staple food means that people have it for sustenance, not always for the taste. I remember a story by Leo Tolstoy called the "Imp and the Crust". It involved a crust of bread. Bread is almost as basic a necessity as water. We have common phrases like bread and butter in English, roti (bread), kapra (cloth) and makaan (shelter) in Hindi and so on. What is Jesus saying when he is calling Himself the Bread of Life. The way I see it He is emphasizing on the fact that He is the true sustenance of life. You cannot survive without Jesus. Really? I mean there are still so many out there who do not know Jesus. Well let me put it this way... remember the fall, spiritual death and everything... your spiritual life cannot be resurrected without Jesus. But that's not all. The first thing that comes to my mind with Jesus as sustenance is Matthew 6:33. Seek first the Kingdom of God. Jesus is the King of Kings. When we seek Jesus all things that we need are provided to us by divine promise. Jesus sustains us through our needs, not through our greed, but always through our needs. He is the bread of life. It doesn't mean that if you believe in Him you starve yourself to see how long you survive on only Jesus. It means that when you have Him in your life you will not have a need to starve unless that has a higher purpose.
