"you will know the truth and the truth will set you free":
The Word of God is the truth and the Word of God is incarnated as Jesus and that truth sets us free from the slavery of sin. It's a standard lesson ingrained in me but the words speak to me more. The freedom from sin is not just a ticket to salvation. It is so much more.
1. Freedom from sin means freedom from lies. Lies are the opposite of truth. When you are surrounded by lies truth is very difficult. So the first thing that truth sets you free from is a web of lies. Lies always exist in webs. You can never find a standalone lie.
2. Freedom from sin means freedom from guilt. Our moral compass is always attuned to God. Just like a sunflower always faces the sun, similarly our moral compass always follows God. How much we listen to it is a different matter. Freedom from guilt means we do not need to look behind our back all the time for the fear of being caught doing something we are not supposed to. That also means we are doing everything we are supposed to. It is obedience.
3. Freedom from sin means the freedom from death- spiritual death. Thus freedom is also life. We often say that bound in shackles of work and responsibility we lose the spark of life. But those are actually the shackles of a sin infested world. God binds us in different kinds of binds, those of love, integrity, honesty and that leads to joy, not entrapment.
Freedom is a beautiful thing. There is a difference between freedom and independence though. Many battles are fought for independence but there is a wonderful freedom in the dependence to God our Father. Relinquishing control over our circumstances we can be assured that he takes care of our needs. That is freedom found in God. It is not independence. It is not each man for himself. It is rather the opposite. It is one body, one goal, to live in the presence of God.
