The meaning of reconciliation is union. True reconciliation removes all differences. So when Jesus says that He desires that we, His followers will be in perfect unity with God the Father He is talking about the completeness of the reconciliation which he performs on the cross. We often fail to see the significance of that reconciliation in terms of our day to day living. We often get confused about where we belong or to whom we belong. Our sense of belonging gets perverted. I belong to my family. I belong to the institution where I work. I belong to my church. We all think that. There is not one amongst us who has not classified himself or herself in such a way. But the truth is that we belong to God, through Jesus.
Each day we are living in unity with God, unity of purpose, unity of principles. However, each day we often forget what that purpose or what those principles are. Those are the moments that we feel lost, because we cannot locate our guiding compass. Jesus acts as our guiding compass Himself, so that we may be in a constant communion with God. That is the purpose of the reconciliation.
