There is such a wide gap between knowing and believing. So many times we are like Martha. We know God's word, His promises. We know. But when we see them unfold before our eyes we do not understand. The Jewish leaders were no different. They had the law and the prophets to prove who Jesus was to them and their nation. Yet they refused to believe. It is easy to sprout scriptures. It is difficult to interpret them in terms of the reality around us. Lazarus was dead. He was buried in the tomb for three days. Jesus came and told Martha that her brother was going to rise again. It was easier to accept it as a religious concept. The rising of the dead on the last day was a hypothetical concept meant to give comfort to the people. When Jesus talks about the resurrection Martha takes His promise as a repeat of the words used for consolation. How many times do we assume that the only purpose of the Word of God is the give comfort? How many times we are looking for empty promises in the Bible? The Bible doesn't give us empty promises however. It gives us truth. Are we ready to handle the truth of the Word of God?
