The witching hour, silence apart from the typing of L fingers on the keyboard and the ticking of the hotel rooms clock.
The taskforce all asleep in other rooms while you sat in your usual black lace night gown in bed, laptop on your lap and doing some research. L sat at the hotels vanity using it as a makeshift desk, updating Lights suspect file on his laptop. The only time he really ditched his usual white shirt and blue jeans was on formal occasions and when he went to bed. You'd gotten him bat printed pyjamas years ago and he still wore them to this day.
"What are you reading darling?" He spoke up.
The page you were on was all about shinigami myths. And while you did plan to tell L about Ryuk, you wanted some tangible evidence to show him first.
"Ghost stories" you replied.
"You seem to be interested in them recently. Well... more than usual"
"I haven't seen this much death on the daily since I lived at the graveyard with my father, it's intrigued me"
"You have always liked your ghost stories"
The page you were on now talked out how in the old myths about shinigami, one could make deals with them to possess the eyes of a shinigami. It allowed them to see names and lifespans of humans, so while you could suddenly see a shinigami it wasn't because of an accidental deal you'd made. You can't see names or lifespans only shinigami themselves. Or at least Ryuk.
"Spooky tales have always been my thing. And when you met me they quickly became your thing too" you smiled at him.
"I was always a morbid kid but you taught me to see beauty in the morbid things. As expected from the daughter of an undertaker" he replied.
Your conversation was interrupted by a crash of thunder outside, making you both perk up a little. Quickly after, the sound of rain hitting the windows and rooftops began to sound.
"Here comes that beautiful winter weather" you said.
"Seance weather" L replied.
"Ritual weather"
"Date weather"
Closing the lid of your laptop, you looked over at your husband. Only lit by the light of his computer and the moonlight from the open curtains.
"When you find a time for a break on this case I expect a date" you teased.
"Of course, as soon as the schedule is open" L replied.
You put your laptop on the bedside table and stretched out your limbs from your cramped up position.
"We're both night owls but on a case like this, you should sleep" you said.
L sighed, knowing you were right. He's always had trouble sleeping, but he never wanted to miss the chance to sleep next to you.
"I know. I'll finish this and go to sleep" he replied.
"I wish we could do more than sleep..." you teased.
He stopped what we was typing and turned to look at you, giving you a slight grin. He knew what that meant, but he also knew what'd you'd say next.
"But the taskforce are much too close. Only on the other side of those thin walls. When we move into taskforce and have our own room..."
"Promise?" L asked.
"Promise. The first night there. Now I think that work will be there in the morning..."
Not passing up the chance to sneak a few kisses in, he closed his laptop and crawled into bed beside you showering your cheek with kisses.
"Patience darling" you replied, placing a kiss on his lips.
"I know. Just sleeping beside you is enough to make me happy"
Finally managing to get him to get some sleep, the two of you slept side by side wrapped up in each others arms. Like a couple buried in the same coffin. Unbeknownst to you in your deep slumber you had a visitor.
Ditching his death note holder, Ryuk had tracked you down and intended to poke around temporary hotel taskforce to try and find out why you could see him. Did you have death note paper or something? Clearly you'd touched something death note related at some point.
Wandering around without drawing any attention, since no one could see him, he dug around the piles of paper work and case files looking for anything you could have touched. He wasn't going to interfere with the case, he was just there to watch after all.
But something about not knowing how you could see him was KILLING the death god. He just had to know. But alas Ryuk came out empty handed, you didn't even know how you can see him so why would you have something from the death note?
Something about you and L made Ryuk completely confused and fascinated. Such strange humans, you weren't at all phased seeing him, like you'd seen a shinigami before. You were rather spooky people, even to a shinigami. He wouldn't be surprised if you and L were secretly death gods yourself.
Or vampires... or witches...
But alas you were just humans who seemed morbidly fascinated with everything dark.
But a human who wasn't even phased seeing a death god and approached it like it was nothing... you were quite the fascinating human.
Ryuk phased through the wall into your room with L, looking down at the two of you sleeping tightly wrapped up together. He couldn't see anything on you that'd suggest you could see him... so... how?
"Ugh, what is with this girl? She's so weird. Dresses like a vampire, married to a living corpse of a human and can somehow see me? Humans are weird but she's the weirdest... is she even human at all?" Ryuk mumbled to himself.
He was at a loss, no idea how you could see him. He desperately wanted to know, but it seems it'd stay a mystery.
"Looks like I'll be keeping an eye on her..."
With his little hunt over, the curiosity still killing him, he phased through the wall and off into the rain he flew off back to boringly wait for light to wake up so he could annoy him again.
This was just getting more and more interesting...
