That paper bugged you. It was the only out of the ordinary thing in lights room.
Him leaving that wallet at home with the paper in it was a big mistake because it was driving your suspicion even more. You couldn't figure out what it was about that paper that bugged you so much, it just seemed out of place. And in a case were you KNOW who the killer is but can't prove it, you need any proof you can possibly get.
That paper, it was connected. You knew it was but not sure how.
You watched the recordings from when you were putting the cameras up in your room, looking for something, anything you'd missed. You'd re-wound and watched back the part where you pick up the paper a million times now. You knew, just KNEW there was something up with it but could couldn't put your finger on it.
"Uugghhhh this is ridiculous" you said to yourself.
"The situation is rather... confusing yes..." L added.
You looked over at him sitting across from you as he watched Light and Misa.
"If I could carry your frustrations for you I would" he said.
"I'd say the same thing to you, I don't like watching you suffer" you replied.
"I don't like watching you suffer either"
What suck ups you were to each other. Anyone would think your relationship was written in the stars with how dedicated you were to each other.
"L, tell me I'm not going crazy. That paper has something to do with it..."
"You're not crazy but the theory sure is. But in this case anything goes really" L sighed.
You were going to rant some more when you were interrupted by the taskforce walking in, apparently having something to say. Well, more like chief Yagami did and the others just followed him.
"L" He said.
"Yes?" L replied.
"I want you to lock me up too"
A series of gasps and panic from the taskforce ensued. But you and L were expecting this and had already prepared it. It was unsurprising that he'd not be able to handle his son being locked up and wanted to stop himself from doing something stupid out of rage.
"I'd figured you'd say that. It's been prepared" L replied.
Looking down at the screen in front of you while the taskforce had their little freak out, you stared at the paused frame of you picking up that paper.
That stupid paper... you just had a feeling.
It's the only out of the ordinary thing, and suddenly you can see shinigami? Only Lights though, not Misa's. Otherwise you'd have seen it that time you ran into her at the shop and at the university. So why Ryuk only? Was it because that paper was connected to Light somehow?
You touched a paper and now you can see shinigami... you touched a paper... and now you can see Ryuk...
Suddenly, as you stared at that paused frame, two dots connected in your head like atoms in the Big Bang that suddenly made everything fall into place.
"ITS A BOOK!" You exclaimed, slamming your hands on the table and standing up in excitement.
It fell silent as everyone looked at you in confusion. The taskforce never having seen you act any other way than intimidating silent type. So the outburst took them back a bit.
"Uh- I mean... sorry" you stammered, sitting back down.
L looked at you like he'd suddenly made the connection too. You'd have to talk to him when he was done with the taskforce.
Your mind raced with the new theory.
That pouch Ryuk had on his belt was about A4 sized... the size of a book. You touched paper and you could see him. It was paper from the book.
You couldn't figure out exactly what the book was. A spell book? A guidebook? A rule book?
Whatever it was it was a book that was connected to Ryuk and after touching it you could see him. What Light had the paper in his wallet for was behind you, but that was how he could see Ryuk too because he'd touched it. Meaning Misa likely had touched her shinigami a book as well and because you hadn't you couldn't see it.
What was the book? Was it the weapon? The guide to the weapon? A contract between the human and Shinigami?
Snapping from your daze in your theory brain, L had grabbed your arm and began to pull you into the other room being done with the taskforce.
"Paper from the book? The one that's in the pouch right?" He asked.
"Exactly. I don't know what the book is for, like spells or something? Maybe a contract? But touching the book or paper from it means you can see shinigami" you explained.
"Darling you're a better detective than I am figuring it out from one single factor"
"Oh don't give me that you suck up, you've solved more cases"
"You solved this problem before I even considered it"
You playfully rolled your eyes, giving him a gentle push. Such a flatterer he was.
"But you're probably right. Didn't you say the pouch was about A4 sized?" L said.
"Exactly that size. Just like a book" you replied.
"There's no way Ryuk will let you touch it huh? I wonder if he's letting Light use it or if he gave him something else that matches the book allowing him to use whatever powers the book has..."
"I haven't figured that out yet. And Ryuk is stuck with Light in that cell for a while so it's not like I can try and get info out of him somehow"
It was then you noticed L was smiling at you, a familiar smile too.
"What?" You stated.
"I love you" he replied.
"Aw, proud of your wife for using her big brain and figuring it out?"
"Yes, you're smarter than you give yourself credit for"
Here he goes again, the flattery.
"Me? Smarter than the world's greatest detective. Absurd" you joked.
"Oh no I'm still smarter, but you're a close second" he joked back.
You snickered at his dry humour, playfully rolling your eyes.
"Well then, if I'm only the second smartest you have to admit I'm the best dressed one" you joked.
"That's not even as lie or a joke you are, misses iconic long black dress"
