Chapter 43 | deal

With the admission from Ryuk, you had an idea.

You knew he wasn't going to tell you details about the death notes, he was very clear about that. But he could still be helpful since he'd clearly swayed to your side now. Fully intending to use this to your advantage you'd been thinking up ways to strike the deal with Ryuk.

It was simple, he stops L from being killed and you'd do something in return. If he likes you and L so much then maybe he'd be open to the idea. There was no way in hell you were yelling L die on this case, you'd said it once you'd say it a million times: he was worth dying for.

But of course, you didn't intend to die either. If there was a gun pointed at L, of course you'd jump in front of the bullet. But that was a very dire circumstance, outside something like that you didn't plan on dying until you and L were old and grey and could wither away after a long life together. The plot of land in your fathers cemetery reserved for the family wouldn't see you and L buried there until you were both too old to function. That was a promise.

It was L Kira wanted dead the most. You were merely his arm candy to Kira. When in reality you were the one that wore the pants in the relationship and it was more like L was your arm candy. That didn't change the fact Kira wanted L dead more than he wanted you dead. L needed the extra protection in this situation, so you'd strike a deal with Ryuk for it.

If Light ever got his power back though, you'd probably need a bit of protection too since you both absolutely hated each other. He'd be willing to kill you even if you weren't L's wife. You were more concerned for L though.

Your beautiful darling boy wouldn't ever get hurt as long as you were around, that was a threat to anyone to dared try. And a promise to L.

After a few days conjuring up ideas to strike this deal, and after Matsudas screw up leading to Misa taking matters into her own hands for Lights sake and exposing Huguchi as the yousuba Kira the click was ticking.

There were plans to lure Higuchi out in the works, L had been working endlessly with the taskforce to make one of the group members a yotsuba whistleblower. Namikawa was the one who ended up in that role.

Basically, if you were this close to getting the Death Note back, you needed to make this deal now. You'd lured Ryuk out of the main room with you silently so the taskforce wouldn't notice you sneaking around. You stood before the shinigami on the rooftop, arms crossed and signature striking glare in your eyes. Ryuk could swear every time you did that you were somehow lit with bela lugosi lighting.

"Alright, I'll cut it the chase. I want to make a deal with you Ryuk" you began.

He'd made deals before, usually ones involving half of a persons lifespan. But since you weren't aware of the eye deal he knew you were talking about something else. He was intrigued.

"What kind of deal?" He asked.

"I want you to prevent L from dying in this case. I've said before but I'm not letting him die until we're both old and grey. I don't care what I have to do, but if you can stop Light, Misa, Higuchi, Rem, anyone who might try and kill him from doing so... I'll do it"

Now this was something he wasn't expecting. He knew you were fiercely protective of L, but he didn't think you'd go as far as to make deals with shinigami for him. It only made Ryuk more enthralled with you. He'd never seen a love so strong before.

"Since I like you and L I'm willing to make a deal, but what's in return for me?" Ryuk admitted.

"That depends, what's the steaks? I could just provide you with extra apples or I could do something more drastic. Like I said, I'm willing if it's for L" you replied.

So you were leaving it up to him huh? Probably because you'd never made a shinigami deal before and didn't know what the steaks usually are. He didn't want to take your lifespan, since he didn't want to see you or L dead yet. But if you were going to solicit him as a supernatural bodyguard for L then he needed some form of payment. That's how shinigami deals work.

Ryuk pondered for a moment, thinking of an appropriate payment. He'd be lenient since he liked you, but not too lenient because he was here for entertainment after all.

"Hmm... alright. If I stop L being killed under any circumstances, you have to..." he began, trying to think of something.

It suddenly hit him. A way to strike a deal, protect L by getting Rem off his back and please rem at the same time.

"... break up Misa and Light" Ryuk continued.

You took a second to process that strange request. What did Ryuk care for? Why the interest in Misa and Lights relationship?

"I mean he's an asshole to her anyway so I'll do it... but why?" You asked.

"Misas shinigami is willing to kill anyone that hurts Misa. Including L. If you can break Misa and Light up then you're removing her from Lights risk. He can't kill her because it'll make him look suspicious that they break up and she immediately dies. So once they're apart Rem will step back because the deal she has with Light will be nullified. As long as you can break Light and Misa up then you'll eliminate Rem as a risk. And Rem will probably get off my back about dropping the book that endangered Misa into Lights grip in the first place. In return I keep Misa and Light from killing L. Plus Lights an ass to Misa even I know that. We got a deal?" Ryuk explained.

So that's how it was huh? Light had used Misas shinigami as a weapon. Well two cab play at that game, if he's using Rem as a weapon you'd use his own shinigami Ryuk as a weapon to disarm Rem.

If Misa was away from Light not only would she be better off, but she might even turn him in out of spite. Rem will back off L and he won't die. Ryuk protects L from Light or Misa and you've got an elaborate but perfect deal.

"We have a deal, leave it to me to break them up. It'd benefit everyone involved anyway. Well expect Light" you replied.

"Heh, this will be interesting to watch. You better act quick too or they'll finish planning their sting operation before you can break them up. You're so lucky I like you and L" Ryuk chuckled.

"I am lucky, thank you Ryuk. You're kind of annoying sometimes but other than that you are quite the vibe. Not every spooky bitch can say they have death as their friend but here I am"

Ryuk gave you a slightly confused look at the last line, caught a bit off guard.

"I'm your friend?" He asked.

"You're helping me aren't you? You like me and my husband so yes, you're my friend"

He'd never been called a friend before... it was... nice.

"Huh... I guess I am"

"And I'm sure if you stop jump-scaring L for laughs he'd be willing to call you a friend too"

Maybe being friends with a married couple of morbid people wasn't that bad. Maybe humans weren't that bad.

Maybe love wasn't that bad after all...
