Chapter 39 | parental discussion

L as usual was sucked deep into his work, bossing the taskforce around and disassociating whole staring at a screen. But you needed to talk to him about this Ryuk thing. You felt like a mother trying to wrangle a misbehaving kid at this point. And if you were the mother, L was the father.

"L"

He didn't respond, too distracted by his work.

"Darling" you tried again.

The people around him could hear you just fine, so clearly he'd gone so deep into detective mode he'd blocked him everything but this thoughts out. Only one thing left to do.

"Mon Cher"

Immediately turning and giving you his full attention, you smirked slightly at the power you held over him with that name.

"Cara Mia?" He replied.

"A moment, please" You beckoned.

Slightly confused as to what you wanted, he got up and followed you into the hall anyway. Walking to the end of the hall lead you to one of the many balconies the building had where you stood out there in privacy under the moonlight.

"What pressing matters bother you my darling?" He asked.

"It's that bloody shinigami. You know how we've noticed he'd acting strange?" You began.

"God I feel like we're parents having a conversation about our rowdy child with all his mischief lately. He's not a threat to us now is he?"

"Actually I think quite the opposite. Earlier he actually gave me a hint if you can believe it"

L couldn't believe it, after all that's talk of not picking sides and he's giving you a hint?

"He said that the yotsuba Kira is working with a group. There's only one book, and one Kira, but he's consulting a group of some kind" you explained.

"Hmm... so we'll have to look for not only the actual Kira but the accomplices as well" L replied.

"Correct, although that's just one thing I wanted to say. Ryuk himself is my next concern, while he's kept his work about not letting me know anything about the books beyond what I've been able to figure out through research myself and my own experiences seeing shinigami, he broke his work about hints. He gave US the hint... not Light, not the current Kira"

Now that did strike L as odd. He was aware there was a weird fascination that Ryuk had with the two of you, but he wasn't aware how deep it ran.

"That's true... why would he give us the hint? Wouldn't he want to side with a Kira since it means more death?" L questioned.

"I think, as crazy as it sounds... he likes us. Genuinely. More than just fascination, he actually likes us. Weather it's in a 'they're cool humans because they're morbid' or a 'they're nicer to me than Light and the current Kira' way I'm not sure. Part of me wonders if maybe it's mixed with jealousy..."

"Jealousy?"

"About our relationship. He always says shinigami can't love but the fact Misas shinigami from what we know seemed to have some kind of crush on her, it seems more like he doesn't understand love and when he sees two humans as deeply connected as us, he wishes he could have that himself. He'll never admit it though"

L pondered for a moment, it did seem possible. Especially since Ryuk was always so defensive of the 'shinigami can't love' thing, almost like he can't admit to himself they can. Although he'd admit that he couldn't exactly see Ryuk if all people... well creatures... be love struck.

Maybe it was a mix of fascination, jealousy and favour over the others involved in the case.

"So... basically what you're saying is he's in love with us? Both of us? Even me?" L asked.

"Maybe. It might not be romantic per se more familial or platonic. I'm not sure since he won't tell me anything and refuses to believe in love. But whatever it is, he loves both of us in some way. Don't worry, a shinigami can't break us up if that's what you're worrying about"

"No no, there's no way in the pits of hell anything could come between us. But it's a bit spine chilling... yet oddly flattering, that a shinigami might be infatuated with us"

You felt the same, while it was a bit of an odd thought it was also rather appealing to think even gods think you and your husband are the hottest couple in all the realms. Ryuk was an odd creature, but just as you fascinated him, he fascinated you. If this was the case and he was in some way in love with you, that would be not only interesting but helpful to you since he'd be willing to help you more.

"I think he's in denial, but once he comes to terms with it... well we might just be able to pester him for more hints" you smirked.

"Turn him against Light and the Kira name even though he was the one that dropped the book in the first place? I like your thinking" L replied.

"You like more than my thinking darling"  you said, placing a quick kiss on his lips.

That sentence was the gateway to yet another back and fourth of flirting between the two of you, an exchange that happened often. Reaching for your hand and placing a kiss on the back of it, he gave you a sly look.

"Everything about you, my darkness" he replied.

"Like?" You teased.

"Your voice, your eyes, your smile, your hair, your demanding presence, your intelligence, your threats, your rewards, your understanding-"

With each point, he placed a kiss up your arm. Something he'd learnt was a good way to get what he wanted from you, quite literally kissing him to you and treating you as the goddess of the relationship was a ticket to all your affections. Affections he fell in love with all those years ago and married you for. Stopping the trail of kisses at your shoulder, you gently grabbed his chin and had him look up at you, eye to eye.

"That's a good boy" you teased.

"Darling don't tease, I have work to finish" he replied.

"It can wait"

"The taskforce will roast me"

"And I'll roast them back. Their marriages must be pretty boring ones if they can't understand a couple need to waltz every now and then huh?"
