Chapter 16: Soulless Heart

Erwin's POV

Waking up to Hanji's face next to me never gets old. She sleeps soundlessly through Jackyln's cries. I had to deal with our daughter. Once I got up to greet her, Zayne was rocking on a chair next to his half-sister. 

Zayne was born 7 years ago. I have no doubt he was Levi's child. Hell, he even looks similar to him with every passing day. It scares me. Fear often strikes me when I believe that Zayne will look exactly like his biological father one day. If so... what would I do?

"What are you doing up this early, Zayne?" I grumbled softly, gently picking Jacklyn up from her crib. I rocked her in my arms, hoping to calm her down just for a bit. "Did you wake up from her crying? Why didn't you wake us up?"

Zayne didn't say anything. Just gently rocking back and forth.

"It's fine, Zayne. Jackyln's just being a bit rowdy." 

As I was rocking her too gently, Zayne finally spoke. "Are you my real dad...?"

"What makes you say that?"

Zayne looked away, looking down at his hands, fidgeting with them. "In school, we learned about how we look like our parents. Other kids say I don't look like Mommy or you. Why don't I look like you guys? Was I an orphan?"

He says it so coldly- just like Levi. But I know Levi's been locked up for over 7 years and he hasn't seen the light of day- again. It shouldn't be possible for Zayne to pick up Levi's characteristics unless... it's passed down from father to son. Does that mean... Zayne might have Levi's killer instincts unless it's calmed down.

"You are your mother's son-."

"So why don't I look like her?"

"Because... the way it works, Zayne, sometimes, the traits from our own parents also come onto you guys. If I remember correctly, your grandmother on your mother's side has some of your traits." Hopefully, he buys it. He was right. He doesn't look like Hanji, even though she's his mother. All of his traits were from Levi.

He glares at me with his monotone gray eyes. "Are... are you sure...?"

"I swear, Zayne. And I love you. You're my son."

Zayne doesn't smile. He walks off to his room. I don't know what goes on in his head. Jacklyn began to cry again. This time, she was hungry.

"Erwin, get the door, please." Hanji pled for help as she struggled to hold onto the squirming baby.

I nodded, getting the door after serving Zayne his plate of food. Surprisingly, a Scout was there. Exhausted and sweaty. "What is it?" I asked, seeing her giving her salute first. 

"C-Commander Erwin, we received news that Levi escaped from his prison. Hours after that, we found out that Section Commander Miche was killed. There was evidence of torture. Not just that, Moblit was found dead as well. Same thing as Section Commander Miche. Sir, we believe... he's finding... her..."

I turned around, seeing Hanji begging for Zayne to eat something. 

"How long ago were the murders?"

"Maybe 4 hours ago? We aren't sure. But Miche was the last one to be killed, as I've seen it. He was in the Scout HQ somewhere near Trost- sir, if I may advise you... I would start gathering the things you need and leave here immediately. Just run to somewhere else."

"Run to the nearest HQ and get a trailer for us then. Quickly."

"Of course."

She ran off to her horse, galloping off. I turned around, seeing Hanji look curiously towards me. "Erwin, what was that about?"
