Nobody saw it coming. Governments fought over the land and resources of our planet. Human beings cared less about their society while greed grabbed the minds of the leaders and the people. The wealthy increasing in their wealth while the poor found it harder to survive. Individuals didn't want to give up what they had for a better cause; the selfish will never succeed in the end.
Technology unintentionally caused people to become lazy while they complained that each generation became less knowledgeable than the one before it. They forgot the true meaning to life as they searched for that meaning with the technology they had. More items and machines to do jobs that expelled the hard working from those needed jobs.
Riots began to happen during all hours of the day and the night through the major cities. People hating one another instead of trying to make things better. They labeled one another while those labels identified them as well. Political liars and thieves, lazy individuals complaining about every corner, that's how I see our world go round.
There were hints of course, the Mayan civilization for one. An ancient human civilization that had predicted the end of days only to be wrong about the date, humans looked past it like it was nothing more than a ruse. Signs of the coming devastation were everywhere towards the end only that the humans never looked in the right spot.
They thought that 'Armageddon' or 'the Apocalypse' had to do with the space around the world. Other visitors arriving to take the planet for themselves, maybe a meteor crushing the planet to smithereens; or the slow rising dead to overcome the quick human body. I laugh at such childish notions now.
It hit on a Sunday, the lord's day of rest, the year date lost on me but the events still clear in all survivor's minds; especially my own. Many were departing the churches when the Apocalypse struck, I never had attended. Holes varying in size were created in numerous spots upon the Earth's crust. The raging fire of the planet leaping forward from its core.
Beasts from some nightmarish imagination rose from the ground terrorizing, slaying, and even doing more heinous things to people. The nations of the world had rallied together to fight back against the creatures. They only failed, those technological weapons doing damage to the monstrosities, but reloading those weapons ended many lives. Armies fell but not without taking out many of the creatures, those soldiers fought with more than they ever had.
Families were torn apart. People watched loved ones fall to those devilish nightmares of unknown origins. Few people fought back trying to save as many as they could, it was here that human evolution kicked in. The deep recess of our genes ignited with a fury to try and give us a hope. The stress and fear pushed our minds far past the 'logical' notion of what we can do; only some of us could do.
Televisions, phones, any device with a screen began to awaken with the image of a blurred man, his voice angelic yet heated. He spoke to all humans, all hearing him at the same time around the globe even as they fought for their lives. I still remember the words.
"You creatures have fallen into despair. You have killed one another ever since your evolution, there has never been a true peace among you and never shall be with you upon this world. The lord has been angered moving in plot to release beings from what you call Hell.
Some of you have discovered a gift, a gift given by the Lord of All and Nothing. With this gift you shall defend yourselves against the hellions.
We are humans of the Sanctum of Haven, a city to the Lord Almighty. Our presence has been in secret throughout the ages of man. All with this holy gift survive and we will find you, all others perish for you are doomed."
The blurred man disappeared never to reappear again but with many news conformations about the beasts, people knew that Hell was upon the Earth's surface. He had spoken of a gift that came to be known as a gift of nature. Elementalists is what many called the people with the gift. People that were able to manipulate a natural element into what their minds could imagine; it was exhausting and taxing to do.
My memories are in a rush as I write this. Water and fire to protect my family and my wife's family, but a memory that will forever haunt me hangs there taunting. Day by day I pray to be taken instead, but to no avail. When I sleep, I see the dark images, that dark demonic man walking out of a cloud of smoke. Those devilish eyes mocking my humanity.
In my weak mind, I rush him sword in hand yelling loudly only to be swatted away like a fly. I used my element to absorb my fall and to strike at that demon. Our weapons struck as he mocked my human frailty, I would not be beaten.
That voice so sweet, so pure, and so terrified for my life; I heard her words. "Save them," she had screamed pointing at her two siblings cradling one another in fear with a demon above them. Their cousin controlling a wildfire but would not make the distance in time to save them. It was in an instant; my will, my instinct doing the work for me as I appeared before them. The rush of the air.
Blood had poured from my chest as I took that demons terrible weapon, I remember smiling at the two. How they hated me, I am forever the villain in their eyes for anything that I do. But I would protect them no matter what they felt towards me, that is who I am. I turned to cut the demon down only to see her, trying to ignore the pain piercing my body.
My mind snapped at the image before me, too horrible that even now I dare not to remember as rage would burst from me. I have trouble controlling my anger and even now the pencil shakes while I write. I held her as the light slowly erased from those heavenly brown eyes. My hand pushed back that brunette hair as tears dropped down on her face. Pain forever pain, I no longer care about this world.
So, the world of humanity was destroyed, many calling the day what it was, the Apocalypse. While others to afraid of the word calling it the Day of Terror, not wanting to acknowledge the truth of the events. The Sanctum of Haven has secured a large area for its people from what I have heard on my journey.
People now roam the planet, some creating small towns for protection if not under the protection of the Sanctum of Haven. Everyone seems to do whatever it takes to survive. There are many that go to the extreme such as killing, raping, or eating one other. I show disgust towards those in the moment of discovery, but alone I weep for those cruel individuals.
He or she looks down upon us children with sorrow, knowing that the punishment was far too much for us. We all must look to the future and learn from the past transgressions if any of us are to survive.
Many have stayed together while others go down another path alone. The world has changed yet the game is the same even if it is on a new level of playing.
Every night I stare up at the sky wishing I was with you, but my journey must go on even if the pain is too much to bear. I must conclude my own life with honor; I must fulfill my vow to you that horrible day those words burning in my brain all day, every day.
"Protect them..." so I shall my dear beloved, so I shall. Not the world before and not the world now will ever strike them while I breathe. Honor is life, love is life; I detest the old leaders for ever forgetting these simple acts and notions. So, my beloved with my last breathe I shall fulfill my vow to you, my sword shall never fall from my hands even in death but one day I shall join you.
Forever your servant and knight,
-The Hunter
