"I see someone else beat me to you." Henry says talking around Matthew.
Henry at least had the common decency to knock. I was going to answer the door, but Matthew beat me to it, and now here we are. Henry trying to talk to me through another person.
"Yes he did." I answer, I don't make a move towards the door, and Matthew doesn't move away either. Both of us were on the same page. Cage Henry out, and then we could finish our conversation.
"Could I talk to you?" he asks defeatedly.
"No." I answer flatly.
Matthew slowly closes the door in Henry's face, and I know he is going to pay for that move later. But in this moment he doesn't care. Right now there is only him and me in his mind. He takes his seat across from me once more.
"So about that book..." he lets his sentence trail off.
"I..." I let my sentence trail off, telling him what I am, what that book means. It breaks rules. Rules that have kept me alive.
"Just the book." He tells me. "You don't have to tell me anything else. Not if you don't want to."
"The book is important. I need it to... for something." I lock eyes with him, watching a corner of his mouth quirk into a smile.
"Just for something?" He questions, a smile taking over his face.
"Just for something." I repeat. A smile taking over my face.
"Alright then." He leans back in his chair, "What do you want me to do?" he asks, and for a moment I forget that I wont be here much longer.
"I know you loved walking to those meetings." I start, and I can see the unsaid groan of protest in his face. He wasn't going to like what I have to say next. "I need you to cover for me tomorrow. Make sure no one comes around here."
"So I get to keep the royals busy running around here, while you get all the fun?"
"Yes." I answer. He shakes his head at me.
"I think you might owe me something in return."
"I am already-"
"I want you to answer a question for me. Just one."
I glare at him, he isn't in the position here to argue with me. I can still kill him. I could still decide to end him for walking in at the wrong moment. For sticking his nose into the wrong place. But I won't. Because I trust him. Because I know that whatever he is wanting me to answer matters to him.
"One question. One answer." I state.
"When were you going to tell me? And don't act like you don't know what I am talking about."
"I wasn't, because you deserve more than that." A heaviness weighs me down. I should have told him the other day in the hallway.
"Bullshit." He roars at me. "I deserve to know."
"Why? I am just a job to you. All I am is a means to a paycheck."
He glares at me, a fire burning in his eyes. I regret the words that just left my mouth. I am more than just a paycheck. Everyone else can see that, so why cant I admit that to myself?
"Matthew-"
"Forget it. I will keep everyone busy for you tomorrow." He storms out of my room, slamming the door behind him.
I stare at the door. I stare at the crack that he left in the door. Soon I am glaring at the crack through my tears. He broke the door, like I broke him, like he broke me. We are connected, even though I don't want to admit it. Even though I want to glance over the connection that has developed.
"Get up." I whisper to myself. "Get up." I cant keep sitting here, I have a job to do. I have names to look at. I have to figure out what I am doing tomorrow.
But you have to talk to him. You have to fix things. The mission can wait.
I shake my head, clearing the thoughts in my head. Listening will only make me weak. I turn away from the door towards the book.
