Allison

I stood at the white board in the garage at nineteen. This was one of the days that I worked there, since I had the next day off from the hospital.

"Hey Allison what- whoa." Maya said walking up and seeing writing covering every inch of it.
"It might work if I just..." I erased a part with my hand and wrote something else.

"Did you find her May- whoa." Andy stopped next to Maya.
"That should work. If they do that at the same time, and then he moves there and fixes that..." I muttered.

"Uh Mija? Are you okay?" Andy walked up next to me.
"I'm fine Tia. I heard you two come up. I just wanted to see how long it would take you two to say hi." I said as I stepped back from the board looking at it.
"What is all this?" Maya asked.
"A fucking breakthrough, that's what."
"Hey language. I don't care how old you are." Maya scolded.
"Sorry. Ben! Come check this out!" I shouted.

Ben slid down the pole, and walked over.
"Do you get it?" I asked as he read it over.
"That could work. But you'd be crazy to try it."
"I'm first in my class. If any resident can do it, it's me. But it wouldn't just be me. It'd be neuro and cardio and plastics too."

"Can you two geniuses explain what's going on?" Maya asked.

"She's talking about operating on babies inside the womb." He said.
"It's crazy enough that it might work. Just listen. A few months ago, I had this patient. Well, me and Mom did. The baby, Julia, had her heart growing outside of her body. And we couldn't save her, or the mom. The mom had post partum complications, and I already figured out a way to maybe help with that. But this. This will help the tiny humans."

"Okay. Explain." Maya pulled up a chair and sat down. Andy followed in suit.
"You two really wanna hear this?" I asked.
"Of course. I might not understand it, but I wanna hear what you have to say."

"Okay. So. What would happen is we open up like a normal c section. And then we slowly cut open the sac..."
It took two hours for me to explain everything. And in that time, the whole fire house had gathered around to listen.

"And then cardio would come in, and check to make sure the heart is okay. Then plastics would place a skin graft over the heart, and fix the sac. It would heal itself in the womb!" I turned and looked at all their shocked faces.

"I don't understand the whole medical talk, but I think you just did it." Vic said.
"Did what?"
"You pioneered! You made a way for this kind of stuff to happen! This is Catherine Fox award winning type methods!" Ben exclaimed.
"I did it? You guys think I did?" I asked.

"I'm calling Carina and making her and Arizona come down here right now." Maya grabbed her phone.
"I'm calling Miranda and Webber." Ben ran off to grab his phone.
"I gotta call Amy." I quickly dialed her number.

"Hello baby! How's work?" She answered cheerfully.
"I did it. I pioneered!"
"You did what?"

"Come down to the station and I'll explain. I love you!" I hung up and danced in my spot.
"That's my niece right there! Pioneering shit!" Andy stared dancing next to me.

"I'm so proud of you kid. Your Mom and Arizona will be here in five minuets." Maya said.
"Miranda and Webber too. Just explain to them exactly how you explained to us." Ben added.

"Holy shit. I have a method. I have a freaking method! I'm pioneering!" I shouted.
"I can't wait to see you win a Catherine Fox award." Ben said hugging me.

"Okay farfalla, what have you thought of today." Carina asked as her and Arizona walked in.
"We gotta wait for Bailey and Webber and Amy. Mom, I did it. I found a way to save patients like Julia!"
"The baby with the heart on the outside?" Arizona asked.
"Yes! I've been wracking my brain for a month trying to figure out how to do it, and I did it. I figured it out."

"Ben, why did you yell 911 and then hang up?" Bailey asked walking in with Webber.
"I knew it would get you here faster. Allison has something to tell everyone, but we're waiting for Amelia."

"I'm here!" She ran inside.
"Everyone take a seat. Raise your hands if you have questions cause this is a lot."
