I closed my ears with my palms to stop the sound of repeated pounding on the gate. The sound penetrated my mind, totally nagging me. Followed immediately after was my phone blaring on the bed.I further covered my ears a lot more powerfully so the sound would disappear but it remained. The ringing stopped and so did the knocking but I didn't buy it.
For weeks, it had been like this. The constant noon and dusk visit by an unwanted presence. The same presence that severed me the night he was with another.
My phone pinged shortly after I had uncovered my ears. Knowing it was him, I ignored the text, snatching the phone and hurling it towards the wall.
It crashed terribly and fell to the ground, its glass screen shattering everywhere. Accompanying it was a loud squall from my vocals.
It morphed into agonizing whimpers, a stream of tears cascading down my eyes ceaselessly. Taking a pillow by my side, I pulled my knees up, placing the soft pillow atop it. I cried helplessly into it.
The pain was consuming, eating right through my insides. Because of a jumbled mess of emotions, I was in complete slough.
My pain and fears festered when I decided to completely shut him out. I remember when he would wait for me after work but I made sure to escape him. On the days I couldn't, he caught up with me.
He apologised for what he said he had no idea about which was the most annoying part. How would he not know? Cheats and lies were the order of the day.
The first time we talked after that night was the last civilized way we spoke. He had driven all the way down here to speak to me the next day regarding why I wasn't picking his calls.
"Babe, I've been trying to reach you since this morning but you're not picking, are you okay?" He asked, taking a stride inside the house.
I was quiet, shutting the door afterwards.
"You would have last night," I spoke with so much controlled calm, crossing my arms and sitting on the arm of the sofa.
He furrowed his eyebrows, his facial expression depicting a muddled look. "I - I…."
"Nope," I interjected, dismissing him with a wave of my hand. "That's not even important now,"
"What is? Is something wrong because I can very well sense it,"
" You can as well sense that I'm…… I'm done," The words tumbled out of my mouth so poisonously.
He stood stunned for a long time, still trying to decipher what I had said.
"What?" Was only what he was able to summon.
"I know you aren't deaf, nor stupid."
"What are you talking about?" His voice resonated through the whole room in feigned innocence.
"I just realized that there is no use compromising my future for what is uncertain and can never be mine." I said, walking at the slowest pace about the room.
He was quiet, staring right into my direction as if trying to assimilate the information.
"You know, I don't want to assume the worst right now so just make this more clearer to me. Are you trying to say you're breaking this bond?"
"Was there even a bond? Oh I forgot, maybe there was. Anyway you're right, I'm breaking the bond."
I couldn't even measure my anger and frustration right then.
He turned fully to me, his eyebrows relieved now. His features had softened, his long lashes flickering.
"You're crazy right? You think this is a joke? You find this funny?" His tone had climbed, a haunted look in his eyes ensuing.
