Chapter 12

CHAPTER 12

After the incident with Sowon during the first day of school, Minhyuk brought her to his studio.

Flashback

"Why are we here? I thought we'll do some catching up?" She asked him before leaving her car.

"If I'm planning on doing something terrible, I wouldn't let you drive your car. This is the most private place that we can have to talk. I have something important to tell you that concerns not only you but also Jin. I hope this will be quick so you can still drop me off to the university so I can pick up my car."

"I'm sorry. I just need to be cautious."

"It's alright. I understand. I know a lot of things are happening. Let's go."

"You want to tell me about your relationship with Jin?"

"I have already told you about it. It's complicated."

"Byul, we have to lay the foundation of our trust here before we continue with what I am about to propose to you. You have to be honest with me."

"Are you sure there's no sort of any recorder or device here in your studio?"

"We can just talk in your car if you'll be more comfortable with it. I'll leave my things here, you can check me if I have anything on my body to record our conversation."

"Sounds better."

"We're together. Romantically."

"And?"

"We are step siblings."

"So it's true."

"You know?"

"Yeah. That's why we’re here. Can you tell me how did you have this kind of relationship? I won't judge you. I just want to understand what happened."

"Our parents got married after Jin's mom died. My mom and his were best friends. My mom told me that it's Aunt Ji’s request that we become a family."

"Why is that so?"

"Just for the sake of being a family I guess."

"So you're really a family? Why is it not known?"

"Their relationship is platonic. I can sense that. They are frequently on business trips since they are business partners. I can't really say that we treated each other like a family but we're trying, at first. I tried my best to see Mr. Kim as my dad but Jin, he wasn't ready back then, and he really didn't want us to be family."

"So he was the one who initiated this?"

"Yeah, but he didn't force me on anything."

"Are you sure that you're safe?"

"He is often misunderstood. But once you get to know him, he's a great person."

"What about your mom? I won't ask you about your real dad if you're not ready for that talk. It's not our main agenda for today."

"Well thank you. My mom's just chill about it. She's independent. She's great in business but as a mom, don't get me wrong, she's the best that I have but she has her limits. But I can see that she's really trying her best to be the mom that Jin needs. Honestly, I am not a legal child of Mr. Kim since my mom didn't want me to be adopted by him." She paused

"There are only a few people who know about the real connection between them. I think it's my mom's condition to keep everything under wraps. She doesn't want to be associated with any man after all."

"But it's impossible for some to not think that they are beyond business partners."

"I know. And maybe they are aware of it but they don't care about it. True or not, their partnership is powerful."

"How are you with Jin?"

"We're doing great really. But it was cut short."

"You ended your relationship?"

"It's my turn to ask you. How did you know all of this."

"Sowon approached me earlier in January. She was the one who told me everything. She wanted me to help her in breaking the two of you apart. The first time I heard of this, I thought she got insane due to her obsession with Jin but I remembered you told me about your complicated relationship. I didn't know how to approach you with that information.

It's my fault that I wasn't able to warn you about this earlier. I was finalizing my application for scholarship too. I haven't heard anything from her since then. I didn't know that she'd act immediately. She’s firm on ending your relationship with Jin. I decided to talk to you today when I see you in school but seeing you alone, I had an idea what happened."

She’s anxious of what she just discovered. Sowon is really something.

"It's not your fault. Whether you know or not, it's nothing to do with you. Whether Sowon did something or not, we have to face this sooner or later."

"So what's the deal now between you and Jin?"

"We're still together. Sowon wants us to break up. Our Dad is also focused on us. We have to be low-key. We have to endure until we get the approval of our parents."

"Do you think it's possible to happen?"

"What's your proposal?"

"I can help you cover up your relationship with Jin."

She understood what he meant..

"She won't easily believe it when she sees us together. She's a bit smart."

"So let's take things slow. Let's do our catching up to make it more convincing.”

“But I advice you not to tell Jin about this yet." He added.

"I was thinking about it too. But I'm somehow worried about his reaction."

"I can endure a few punches from him."

“Are you really sure about this? Why are you willing to go this far just to help us.”

“I still feel guilty about not being able to warn you about this. Besides, you were once special to me.”

“Am I still special to you?”

“You won’t believe me if I’ll tell you not anymore so why lie? Yes. You still are.”

“What can you get from this?”

“Maybe I can convince you to change your mind.”

“Why not shoot me instead?”

“I’m just kidding. I just want to help you. I couldn’t keep still knowing that you’re suffering and I can be of help.”

“I trust your sincerity Minhyuk-ah. Don’t fail me.”

“You have no idea how much I’m willing to trade just to be your friend.”

She accepted it with high hopes that she’s doing the right thing.
