CHAPTER 23

His father came. He asked his friends to leave them alone since they need to talk.

“Jin-ah.” His heart is breaking seeing his son’s current state.

“I’ve been looking for you.”

He stares at his dad. He’s too tired to get mad. He’s too tired to argue. He remained silent.

He hands him an envelope. Confused, he asks him.

“What’s this?”

“Open it for you to know.”

Taking out the document, his hands are shaking upon reading what it is. A divorce paper. Signed by Miss Moon. And his father.

“Why? When? How did it happen?”

“Your Aunt Ji gave me that before they left.”

“They  what?”

“They already left Jin, and she told me to not look for them.”

He watches as his son slowly falls to the pits of his agony.

He should have been his support when his wife died. He should have been with him as they were both suffering. And yet he wasn’t.

“I’m a bad father Jin-ah. And I bet your mom also thinks the same. I was too stubborn to even listen to Ji-won. I thought that I’m doing the best for everyone, but it turns out, I forced you to join me in grief.

I couldn’t accept that your mom was gone. I couldn’t move on from her death. I thought by insisting to build a new family can help us all move forward; can heal my broken heart, but I’m wrong.

I loved your mom too much that I forgot how to live. I hurt you in all my decisions and I’ve ruined something that was supposed to be beautiful for you and Byul-yi.

I won’t be able to forgive myself knowing that I was the reason behind all this. I wanted to protect her too that’s why I decided to let matters in my hands.”

What he said caught his attention.

“What do you mean dad?”

"Well, what do you think about joining the team that we'll lead the project in Japan?"

"The one with Jin?"

"It hasn't been decided yet since it's just the observation period."

"It's okay for us to work together?"
"We only need one assistant project manager."

"But he's more qualified for it. He's been studying about it since the first time you went there. He knows the project more than I do."

"Well are you saying that you're not as competent as him?"

She stilled from what he told her. He’s challenging her.

“What are you trying to do?

“I just want to know if he’s sincere with you.”

“Stop tormenting him!”

The entire time that he’s been with her, he knew that she is reserved, even passive. But seeing her getting protective to Jin, he’s getting more anxious of the situation.

“Byulie.”

“I love him! He’s not the only one who broke your trust! I did too but why are you only punishing him for something that the both of us started?!”

“You know how he felt towards you before. I cannot let him hurt you Byul. I don’t want something bad to happen to you.”

“He’s your son! You’re too cruel to him. And I don’t need your protection! I didn’t even ask for it! I’m not that weak!”

“I’m your dad.”

“I don’t need a father who can’t be a father to his own child! I’ll leave this house.”

“If you won’t accept this project, I’ll let someone take it instead!”

“I cannot hurt him! This is important to him. He’s put a lot into this! Why are you doing this?”

“I’ll let you leave the house. If his feelings won’t change after this then I’ll give you the chance to prove to me that your relationship won’t harm you.”

“If you trust his feelings, if he really loves you, you’ll accept this.”

"Think about it Byul."

“I’m sorry Jin.”

“I don’t deserve her right? I’m fucking stupid. I guess you’re right dad. She loves me more than I love her. I deserve this right dad? And now she’s gone.”

He embraces his son. Assuring him that no matter what happens, he’s not going to leave him on his own. He did what he should have done a long time ago.

“We both need to heal Jin. I’m sorry for what I did to you. I’m the reason behind this. Don’t blame yourself. I hope it’s not yet late to be a father to you again.”

They wept silently. Letting all the sorrow and anguish they have kept and hidden for a long time out.

“Let’s go home?”
