I can try to explain what my situation felt like, but other than my vision blurring from nerves and my hands shaking, there isn't much I remember.
I remember being out of breath and sweaty. I remember arriving at a farmhouse that sat along the dusty road. I remember a kind, short woman with greying hair opening the door when I knocked.
What I don't remember is her taking me in, feeding me, and allowing me to shower while she washed my clothes. I don't remember her leading me to a bed and inviting me to sleep because I looked exhausted, but she must have because I woke up full, clean, and well rested.
Walking down the stairs, I noticed a crucial detail to her having let me in: she had no tv.
Makes sense, since y'know I was a wanted criminal.
"By the way, dear, I never caught your name," the lady said gently as she guided me to a floral couch.
"Oh I'm.. uh," I was going to try to come up with a random name, but I couldn't, "Y/n."
"That's a beautiful name. I'm Agnes."
"Well thank you so much for the hospitality, Agnes, but I really must be-"
"Dear, I need some help with some of my chores around the house, would you be willing to help? Just for today?"
I considered it for a moment. One one hand, it would be rude to just leave after she was so kind to me, and on the other hand, If I didn't leave immediately, I risked being caught by not only the ninja, but also Edgelord guy.
"What do you need help with?" I asked as I stood. I didn't want this kind old lady to think I was rude or something.
"Well, I have some sacks of flour in my basement that I need to bring up for this weekend. I sell pies on Sundays, you see."
I nodded and followed her down to the basement to grab her flour and hauled four fifty pound bags up to her kitchen.
Once that was done, we brought up fruit reserves and then even went out to pick some berries. I ended up helping her almost all day, and by the time we were done, I was absolutely famished and completely exhausted.
"Thank you, dear." Agnes said, "Now, I understand you must be going, but Please take these with you for your trip." She handed me a cloth with some small bread rolls and a chunk of cheese.
It's great to know I'm gonna be eating like a Skyrim npc I thought to myself.
"Thank you for all your help, ma'am," I said. And with that, I was off once again.
Now, I was thankful for the darkness. It provided a comfort for me after having worked in dark alleyways for so long, and I felt less vulnerable to being found this way. I was, however, in a place I had never been to before, and wasn't as sure of my steps and where I was going as I would have been back in the city.
Thankfully the dirt road was fairly flat, and I only rolled my ankles a couple times in the hours I was walking down it.
I ended up coming upon a small town. Pure luck, if you'd have it, as dirt roads in the middle of nowhere can stretch out for miles upon miles, and I had only walked a handful.
The town was small, but not so small that it was dead. In fact, there was laughing and music coming from behind the walls, and I could see lanterns and strings of fairy lights.
They were having some sort of party.
And I figured that was the best place for me to hide.
