Chapter Thirty-two
♡♡♡
"This diet is a strictly no sugar diet."
Sunghoon looks at his floppy arms and tiny wrists in dismay, unable to look up at his mum would be nodding nonchalantly at his nurse's recommendation. The sour taste of his medicine still rested on his tongue and made him shuffle around in his bed but even that was restricted due to his numb leg.
He draws in his arms closer in a weak attempt to get rid of the coldness in the room – he really did miss cuddling up with Ddeonu and drinking hot chocolate (which he now couldn't do.) He missed the soft caresses of Sunoo's fingers against his own and the gentle pecks he placed on his cheeks when he thought he was asleep.
In short – Sunghoon really did not enjoy his stay at the hospital.
However, the days at the hospital seemed more frequent than it was previously; it was as if his house was his second home instead of the hospital. Sunghoon gripped weakly at the edge of his sheets it seemed like every step he took he would land on a card that would just take him three steps back. Would he ever be able to walk without crutches? That was if he wouldn't die before he could start walking again.
The joint pain increasingly made it harder for him to walk so he just succumbed to spending his days in the hospital instead of straining his limbs even more than they already were. Sunghoon felt as if his body was starting to fall apart on him when he just began living – when he just learnt what living felt like.
"Hi Sunghoon," Sunoo peaked through the slightly ajar door and slipped into his room with a mischievous grin, "sorry if you're sleeping." He smiles warmly and takes a seat beside Sunghoon's bed, facing away from Sunghoon. Resting his head on Sunghoon's bed, Sunoo slips his hand onto one of his with a subtle smile that makes the latter blush under his touch.
"Today is two months or was it three months since we first met, or since the first day I claimed Ddeonu as mine..." He chuckles dryly into his elbow unsure how to keep the lump in his throat locked away from Sunghoon. He clears his throat with a harsh sense of urgencies and begins again, "you can just rest okay – I know just trying is hard enough and I'm so happy that you still are," his vision begins to blur and fade into splotchy watercolours that end up mixing together like a colourful whirlwind.
Sunghoon realises that Sunoo is holding a single flower in his hand but can't make out what flower it is, "The doctors say you don't have very long so I don't know I just want you to know that I won't forget you – I promise." The deep throaty swallow ends up being a shallow choke when a tear slips onto Sunoo's blushed cheeks, "I was going to get you some chocolates but you're on a no sugar diet, but you didn't like eating very much anyway." He smiles through his salty tears.
"Even if you never got to taste the sweet satisfaction of mint chocolate ice cream," he jokes, "I hope you got to feel love – my love – for you..." his silent mutter is met with another gentle tear that he rubs off with his knuckle. He sniffles quietly and sucks in a shallow breath when he feels another tear drip down his cheek, "I know this is sudden and I wish I could be happier for you," 'I do too.'
"But I just want you to know you can tell me if anything's wrong because as long as I'm with you and your happy why should I care about anything else," The silent tears start forming into faint sobs that crack Sunghoon's heart, squeezing Sunoo's hand with all the force he can muster inside his fingers, "I really, really like you..." he breathed out. 'I love you.'
"Just promise me one thing," Sunoo nuzzles up closer to Sunghoon, "don't force yourself to do something for me – it's your last few weeks, make them about you. Enjoy your life, please. That's all I could ask for." He interlocks his finger with Sunghoon's icy ones, his frail grip around his warm hands makes him feel weak, letting out another muffled sob, "This wasn't actually meant to be this sad, actually." He whispers once again.
"I just wanted your last memories of me to be when I'm smiling-"
"Don't say that..." Sunghoon croaks, "please."
"O-okay," He lifts up Sunghoon's hand and presses his lips against his knuckles, holding it tighter than he previously did to feel his non-existent heat against his own skin, "I- Ddeonu?" Sunoo wipes away the tears pooling in his eyes when he feels Ddeonu's noes nuzzle in closer to his leg, "Do you want to see Sunghoon?" He sniffles softly, his eyes stained with a light red colour.
Ddeonu makes his way onto Sunghoon's lap and sneaks under one of his arms, "I missed you," he presses a kiss onto Ddeonu's forehead and gives him a weak smile. It only then did Sunoo notice his tear-stained cheeks and redden eyes that make him feel even worse for saying what he did.
"I didn't mean to make you cry," Sunoo sits on Sunghoon's bed and faces him this time, petting his bunny's grey fur.
"You don't have to feel sorry, Sunoo." Sunghoon smiles weakly and attempts to sit up in his bed, "I wouldn't have out three- or two-month anniversary any other way."
Their chuckles are faint and airy, they hold nothing that is held with the definition of a laugh yet hold everything else they are trying to say. A sudden silence is put upon the two a heavy tension strikes the atmosphere, but it doesn't matter.
"I just remembered I got you a Twix bar but that's probably not much use anymore - is it?" He smiles wryly, brushes the back of his hands to rid of any itchiness from his cheeks.
"You remembered," Sunoo nods proudly with a soft chortle that much perfectly with his overgrown smile, "yours is Snickers – right?"
Sunoo lets his hair cover his face, "Mhm," The date like jitters resurface again and it feels almost like a redo – a second chance – if only Sunghoon had one of those, "doesn't this feel like a date?" Sunoo moves in closer with a coy grin that falters at the end when the embarrassment kicks in.
"Third date?" Sunghoon suggested, with a coy smile that outshone Sunoo's, "Well, if this is a date then can I... kiss you?" Token aback, Sunoo pauses for a second before he nods and leans in closer to Sunghoon's lips. He places a careful hand on Sunghoon's shoulder while Sunghoon wraps his arm weakly around Sunoo's waist.
The kiss is sweet and chaste – the sort of kiss that rears every single butterfly from your tummy and makes them tingle ten times harder. The sweet taste made them pull in for more, yet the kiss ends just as quick as it had started. Lifting up Sunoo's hand, Sunghoon places a gentle kiss on the back of his palm.
"I think this is my favourite date," Sunoo chuckles.
"Me too."
