Year 845, Location Unknown

Ugh... My head hurts. I tried to open my eyes, but they were heavy. So, so heavy. My body was numb, my head feeling as if someone took a swing at it with a rock.

Soon, I was able to open my eyelids just a slit. Immediately, bright sunlight pierced my retinas, forcing me to shut my eyes again.

The feeling began to return to my body. I could tell I was laying on my back, arms and legs limply sprawled out around me.

I tried again and opened my eyes fully this time. My vision was blurry at first, but quickly became clearer. I lay under a densely bloomed tree, short and prickly yellow grass brushing against my skin.

The sky was a deep blue, it reminded me of the ocean. Fluffy white clouds dotted the endless space, gliding smoothly through the breeze. Behind me, a tall stone wall loomed high above my head.

Where am I? What happened to mother and father?

A sharp pain stabbed into my head, causing me to cry out softly and shoot up into a sitting position and cradle my face in my small hands.

"Mama? Papa? What's happening? Why are we leaving home?"

"Rinjie, honey, we're going to a better place. A paradise, you could say."

Rinjie... My name is Rinjie Caine.

"Please! Spare her, she's only eleven! She had nothing to do with it! Johnathan!"

"Rinjie, Anda, I'm so sorry that I dragged you into this."

I am eleven years old. My parents, Johnathan and Anda Caine, were sent to their deaths for committing treason. That's all I can remember. Just how long ago was that? What happened before?

I removed my hands from my face, hot tears streaming from the corners of my eyes. I could recall my parents appearance now.

My mother, silky black hair and golden eyes that shone like drops of melted sunlight. A laugh that rang like small bells tinkling through the air.

My father, his short-kept blond hair sticking up at odd angles, eyes so grey they could rival a storm enveloping the sky.

The last thing I could remember of my parents was their fear-stricken faces as the soldiers injected them with something and pushed them over the edge of the wall and into the unknown land below. From there, everything went dark and I woke up here. Wherever "here" is.

Surrounded by silence, so quiet the buzzing of flies roared in my ears. I could hear the blades of dead grass shift and brush against each other. It was almost...nice. Alone by myself, in a pretty field.

The silence was shattered as the thundering of hoof steps drew close to me. My head snapped towards the sudden sound and I saw a small convoy of horses. Some carried people, some did not. Most of the people were traveling on foot. Behind one of the horses was a wooden carriage, large lumps piled atop.

Forest green cloaks flowed in the light wind, a white and blue winged pattern visible on the backs.

As they came closer, I noticed they looked solemn. I wondered why until the sharp scent of blood and an unforgettable smell that I could only assume was death hit me.
